Darkest Dungeon 2 Losing Progress Issue: Is There Any Fix Yet

The developers behind 2016’s Darkest Dungeon finally released its sequel. Titled Darkest Dungeon 2, the game has been in early access since October 2021 on the Epic Games Store. The first game in the series was a big hit among the indie gaming community. Since then, the series has blossomed into something much bigger. Darkest Dungeon 2 is here to create the same magic its predecessor created, and so far, it seems like it’s succeeding in that task. The overall reception of the game is positive, with fans appreciating the shift to 3D graphics and the usual Darkest Dungeon gameplay loop. However, some issues have been hindering that enjoyment. A particular one is players losing progress in the game.

An issue like this is detrimental to the whole gameplay experience for anyone. But it’s something that’s not entirely preventable either. It’s one of the reasons why developers need to include cloud save support in their games. Moreover, trying to find the root cause of an issue like this is like searching for a needle in a large haystack. So, has Red Hook Studios released any official fixes for this issue? Let’s find out!

This losing progress issue seems to stem from players updating their old early access build to the latest full-release version 1.0 build. Some players believe that the problem is due to a cloud sync error from the clients. Although there are reports of this happening on Steam, Epic Games Store has seen the majority of complaints.

Right now, there’s no official fix from the devs. All you can do is save locally and make a backup of the saved game files just in case. Players will be able to find their saves by going to the C: Drive, selecting Users, and then the folder with your username. Next, open AppData > RedHook > Darkest Dungeon II > SaveFiles. To back up your files, simply copy the folder and paste it somewhere else.

This is normally what the path will look like unless you do a custom install – C: Drive\ Users\(Your Username folder)\AppData\RedHook\Darkest Dungeon II\SaveFiles.

We recommend that you save your progress locally very frequently since there’s no indication of when this error will wipe out your progress. So, when can we expect an official fix to drop? It’s particularly hard to answer that question since the devs are busy with stuff like Steam Deck, Gamepad, and Workshop support. Being such a new release also means dealing with a myriad of new and old issues. There are already a lot of issues being reported on the official forums, and the devs did release their first hotfix after the game’s full release. However, that hotfix was mainly to do with localization and gameplay mechanics. Players should expect an official fix for such glaring issues within the first few weeks of release. But do note that this is just speculation from our side and not a confirmed update, so make sure to take this information with a pinch of salt.

Additionally, you can join the official Discord server of the game if you want to air your thoughts and report issues. You can also check out other guides related to Darkest Dungeon 2 on DigiStatement.
