Out of all the currently active Paradox games, Crusader Kings 3 is regarded as the easiest. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why it has amassed such a large and loyal fanbase following the game’s release in 2020. Furthermore, CK3 just recently received the highly anticipated major update, Legacy of Persia. Although the game is mostly issue-free, at times some players have reported the game crashing with mods.
Now we can’t really give you one sole cause for this issue. The problem here could be related to CK3 having some missing files or the mods being outdated. All in all, it’s pretty hard to find one sole cause for this issue due to just how common it is. Nevertheless, whatever the issue here may be, continue reading to find out the workarounds for it.
Crusader King 3 (CK3) crashing with mods: How to fix it?
Although an official fix for this issue is yet to be released, you can try these effective workarounds to get rid of it for good:
Update –
Well, the obvious first thing to do here is to simply update all of your mods and the game itself. Most mod-related issues stem from a mod being outdated, so this will help a lot. However, if the issue continues, you can switch to another workaround.
Verify the integrity of game files –
There’s a possibility that the issue here is not due to mods but to the game having some missing or corrupted files. In such cases, the only fix is to simply verify the integrity of game files. To do that, you just need to follow the instructions below:
- Launch Steam and click on Library.
- Now, right-click on CK3 and select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- Restart your PC once the process is over.
Remove mods –
A very common culprit behind such an issue seems to be mod conflicts and, as we stated before, outdated mods. Generally, the recommended way to deal with this is to simply remove the problematic mod. For that, you can make use of crash logs. If you don’t know where the crash logs are kept, this will help you with that:
- Windows: C:\Users%USERNAME%\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Crusader Kings III\logs
- Mac: ~/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings III/logs
Place mods in the correct order –
Your mods aren’t going to work properly if you don’t have them placed in the correct order. While you can ignore this for most mods, you can’t do the same for certain specific mods. Most mods have a dependency, which will be stated in the description. So, take a look at them and order your mods correctly.
Reinstall –
If nothing else works, try reinstalling all of your mods. You can even go ahead and reinstall the game itself and see if that works. If this doesn’t yield any meaningful results, we suggest you get in contact with support.
