Cookie Cutter crashing on Steam Deck How to fix it

Cookie Cutter is a new dynamic 2D Metroidvania adventure that has carved a niche in the gaming world with its unique blend of violence, love, and hand-drawn aesthetics. Set in a dystopian universe, players take control of Cherry, a fierce android, on a quest for revenge. With its release on December 15, 2023, and subsequent Steam Deck verification, players are already playing this title on Valve’s handheld consoles. However, not everything is going as smoothly as expected for some players. In other words, they are encountering unexpected crashes on the Steam Deck. So, how do you fix it? Well, as always, here we are to answer all your questions.

Portable platforms like the Steam Deck and the new Steam Deck OLED offer gamers the convenience of experiencing metroidvania titles like Cookie Cutter on the go. Fortunately, for the majority of players, the game on the Steam Deck has proven to be a smooth and enjoyable experience. However, for those facing crashes, finding a quick solution becomes the top priority. So, here’s how you can fix this issue.

Cookie Cutter crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

Cookie Cutter crashing on Steam Deck How to fix it

As of now, there is no official fix for the reported crashes in Cookie Cutter on the Steam Deck. And to top it off, with the reports of crashes being relatively scarce, no community-suggested workarounds have emerged either. That being said, we’ll be closely monitoring the situation and will promptly update this page once a tried-and-tested workaround is discovered or recommended by the developers. In the meantime, you can try some of the workarounds mentioned below that have worked for similar crashing issues with other games on the Deck.

Restart Your Console

Sometimes, all you need is a simple restart as an effective first step in troubleshooting any technical issues with the Steam Deck. Just close the game, hold your power button and power off the Deck. Wait for some time and then restart it.

Check Your Deck and Game for Updates

Updates should always be your top priority so making sure both your Steam Deck firmware and the game itself are up-to-date is crucial. Developers frequently release updates to address bugs and enhance compatibility. Checking for the latest updates for both the console and the game can help mitigate crash-related issues.

Move the Game to the Internal SD

Transferring the game from external storage to the internal SD card of your Steam Deck is yet another workaround to try out. External storage, while convenient, often leads to slower read speeds, which might be causing those crashes. So, by moving the game to internal storage, which is an SSD, you can potentially solve the crashing issues.

Try Different Proton Versions

Natively, Cookie Cutter should not require any help from Proton. But if you are still experiencing crashes, trying to experiment with different Proton versions in the Steam Deck settings might offer a workaround for crashes. Certain versions may provide better stability and improved performance.

Lower Graphic Settings (If the game launches)

If you manage to launch the game successfully, consider lowering the graphic settings. Lowering graphical demands can reduce strain on system resources, potentially preventing future crashes. Adjust settings such as resolution, texture quality, and effects to find a balance between performance and visuals.

Use Desktop Mode

Switching to Desktop Mode on your Steam Deck could offer an alternative environment that might help circumvent crashes. While in Desktop Mode, try launching the game and observe if the crashing issue persists. Sometimes, a change in the operating environment can lead to more stable gameplay.

Reinstall

If all else fails, reinstalling “Cookie Cutter” is a more drastic but often effective measure. Uninstall the game, then redownload and reinstall it. This process can rectify issues with corrupted installation files, ensuring a clean and stable game environment.

We hope that you were able to solve the crashing issues with the workarounds mentioned here. Since the game is Deck verified, we’re optimistic that the developers will keep improving Cookie Cutter for the Steam Deck and fixing any reported issues. That is all for this guide.
