Black Widow has never had her own game, despite her massive popularity among the Marvel Comics fanbase. She has appeared in several Marvel video games, however, like the Marvel vs Capcom series of games, and most recently, in Square Enix’s Avengers game. While all of her video game appearances did indeed do the character justice, it can be said that her combat capabilities have never really been true to those in the character’s comic book version. In this article, we will be taking a look at the possibility of a new Black Widow game being in the works, and when it could be coming out. Right, let’s get into it.
As has been pointed out by CBR and a host of fans on Reddit and other discussion forums, the Splinter Cell franchise has already set the perfect precedent for a stealth-focused Black Widow game. While Assassin’s Creed games provide us with steal gameplay in a more primitive setting, there really is no other game franchise, except, perhaps, Metal Gear Solid that provides modern, tactical stealth, like Splinter Cell does. However, the reason behind Metal Gear Solid not really being the perfect mould for a Black Widow game to be fit into is the equal ease with which Snake is often able to negotiate encounters guns ablaze. This is not the case in the Splinter Cell games, and would not be the case for Natasha Romanoff either.

Ubisoft’s and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series has not had a mainline instalment since 2013, with only a VR spin-off being announced. Splinter Cell has gone from being one of Ubisoft’s main priorities to little more than an afterthought. However, the true spirit of a Splinter Cell game could easily be revived by a Black Widow game, and no matter which developer picks up the licensing to the game, they definitely should be looking at the groundwork that has been laid by the Splinter Cell games as an inspiration for their game.
Seeing as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow prequel movie is coming out on July 7, 2021, interest in the former KGB agent turned SHIELD operative could not be higher. The following months after the movie’s release could be the best possible time to announce a Black Widow game and maybe even release some proof of concept footage, as Marvel looks to cash in on the increased popularity that the character is bound to enjoy right now.
The potential Black Widow video game will definitely be coming out on the next-gen consoles, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and presumably PC, and considering the large scale project such a game would have to be, we may have to wait a good two to three years from announcement to get any closer to its release.
We hope you are as excited as we are for what should be a masterpiece of a game. Make sure to check out our other articles on the upcoming Forza Motorsport 8, Demon Slayer Hinokami Keppuutan and F1 2022. Cheers!
