Steal or Pickpocket in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3, the latest title in the Baldur’s Gate series by Larian Studios, is one of the best RPG titles that you can get in 2023. The developers have crafted a game where players really get to immerse themselves in the story and explore the world. The experience of BG3 is much more engaging and challenging than the other RPG games that you’ve played. You can literally do anything and everything to complete your quests and move forward in the story. Of course, combat and dialogue choices are common in such games. As such, you can even steal or pickpocket items from other NPCs. But if you’ve just got the game at your disposal, you might be wondering how to steal or pickpocket in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you want to learn more about stealing from NPCs in BG3, continue reading.

When it comes to stealing or pickpocketing in the game, you need to first understand that you’ll have other options to get your desired items from NPCs. You will, at times, be able to rob these items from the NPCs by Intimidating them. Or you can even try to persuade them using the correct dialog choices. But what if you’re unable to persuade them to provide you with what you need through verbal choices, and you don’t want to damage your reputation by robbing them? This is where stealing or pickpocketing items comes into play. If you can do it right, you’ll be able to collect literally anything in the game from other NPCs without facing any major consequences. But this won’t be an easy job.

How to Steal or Pickpocket in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Steal or Pickpocket in Baldur’s Gate 3

Make no mistake, situations where you’ll need to pickpocket an item from an unaware NPC are quite frequent in BG3. The reason can be anything—perhaps you’re willing to steal a key that you need to open a locked door, or maybe you need to steal weapons or potions from your enemies. In any case, if you need to steal, you have to do it with the utmost care to avoid being caught.

Note: You must make sure to save your game progress before attempting to pickpocket someone.

Prerequisites

Note that pickpocketing an item from anyone would require you to pass a Sleight of Hand check. You will also need dexterity and stealth for this purpose if you’re going to steal from someone. For this, it’s advisable that you use a Rogue or a Bard character to fulfill this task. You can check your party, and whoever has the highest Dexterity Modifier and Sleight of Hand skill should be your best bet for stealing. If your own character isn’t up to the task, you can always use someone like Astarion. We also advise that you use a Cleric character to cast the “guidance” spell on your thief character to improve your chances of success.

Get ready to steal

Once you’ve got everything in check, crouch and sneak up behind your target, whom you want to pickpocket. Remember to stay out of their field of vision, which will be marked by a red zone. Once you sneak up behind them, you should ideally enter turn-based mode to avoid them suddenly turning towards you and catching you in the middle of the stealing act. Then, click on the NPC, and you’ll find the option to pickpocket. If the NPC is carrying multiple items, you can steal all of them. However, remember that different items will have different Sleight of Hand check targets. Simply hover over the item you want to steal and then click on steal. It’ll roll the dice, and if you pass the check, you’ll succeed in pickpocketing. Once you’ve got what you need, move away from the NPC and toggle out of the turn-based mode.

What if you’re caught?

Now, remember that if you fail to pass the check, you’ll be caught by the NPC. Depending on where you are, they may attempt to leave you with a warning, throw you in jail, or straight-up attempt to kill you. You have the option to talk yourself out of trouble or maybe even return the item that you stole. If you’re using Astarion, who is rich enough in the game, you can try to bribe the NPC with gold. Or, as a last resort, you can shift to your aggressive gear and start attacking the NPC and killing them before they can kill you.

So, this is how you can steal or pickpocket in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you learn how to do this successfully, you can easily collect a number of valuable items in the game. You can refer to this guide to get better at stealing in the game. And if you enjoyed reading this article, stay tuned to DigiStatement for more such gaming-related content.
