HarmonyOS 2.0 beta update recruitment starts for Huawei P40, P40 Pro, Mate30, Mate30 (5G), Mate30 Pro, Mate30 Pro

Apple with iOS and Google with Android are the two major operating system that are used on smartphones, but as everybody knows Apple has a tight grip on devices running iOS and Android is dependant way too much on Google for its services inside the OS. Huawei learned this the hard way. Since the ban from the US Commerce Department, they have been cut off from GMS services. But the company is far from giving up its smartphone business. Thus, Harmony OS.

Harmony OS was announced around one and a half year ago and Honor (Huawei’s budget brand) was the first to show off the OS in a Smart TV. The development of the OS began in 2012 to reduce the dependency on Google for Android. Harmony OS can be adapted into different type of devices like smartphones, wearable tech, and IoT devices like fridges etc.

Harmony OS 2.0 was launched on 10th September 2020 at the Huawei Developer Conference where they announced that software could be used on smartphones, in-car entertainment devices, wearable tech and not just an OS which would be capable on running just on a phone but adapt to different devices also. HarmonyOS 2.0 comes with support of over 15,000 API’s to support development of apps for smartphones, wearables, cars, larger displays and many more. You can register for the beta version after which you will receive an OTA (over-the-air) update on your eligible device for HarmonyOS 2.0.

The following devices are eligible for the developer beta:-

  • Huawei P40
  • Huawei P40 Pro
  • Huawei Mate 30
  • Huawei Mate 30 (5G)
  • Huawei Mate 30 Pro
  • Huawei Mate 30 Pro (5G)

As this is a developer beta, the experience will be buggy and we advise you to back up all of your data before trying the software update or not update your primary device to this beta. Developer betas are usually intended for developers to start developing their app for the new update. You could downgrade from the beta to EMUI11 but your data may get deleted, so keep a fresh backup ready.
