Bohemia Interactive, the studio behind ARMA and DayZ, just recently released their free-to-play online survival shooter, Vigor, on PC. Released as an early access title on PC via Steam, the game has already been available on other major platforms for quite a while. And since it has made its debut on PC, many fans have also chosen to enjoy it on their PC handhelds, like the Steam Deck. Unfortunately, some Steam Deck players have complained about Vigor crashing on it a lot. Don’t worry, though! This guide here will help you deal with that issue.
At the time of publishing this guide, Vigor isn’t officially supported for the Steam Deck. However, the game is indeed playable on the Deck, and the developers have promised to provide official support for the Deck in the future. As for this crashing issue, there could be a number of causes behind this issue ranging from missing game files to the Deck being behind on software updates. Regardless of the cause here, this issue needs to be fixed. So, without much further ado, let’s go ahead and find out all possible workarounds for this.
Vigor game crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it
Since there’s no official fix for this issue right now, players will have to make do with the following workarounds. Try them all and skip a workaround only if you’ve tried one before.
Force Proton –
Players can try forcing Proton on the game and see if that works. A number of crashing issues have been dealt with this way, so try it out. To force Proton, first, you will need to head into the game’s Properties settings. That can be done by selecting Vigor from your Library and then pressing the Options button. Next, select Properties and switch to the Compatibility tab. Check the Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool checkbox. After that, select a Proton version from the drop-down menu below. We suggest using the latest Proton version or Proton Experimental.
Restart the Deck –
Restarting your Deck is also a common workaround you can try. Simply close any app or game you are using and then do a quick restart of the Steam Deck. Once the restart is complete, launch Vigor and check if the issue persists. If it does, we suggest switching to a different workaround.
Update –
Make sure that the Deck is indeed updated to the latest version available. Simply doing so can help you deal with a ton of issues, including this one. So, if the Deck has an update available, go ahead and download it. Similarly, if there’s an update available for the game, download and install it too.
Install Vigor on the Deck’s internal memory –
This particular fix is mainly for those who happen to have Vigor installed on a microSD card. Similar issues have been dealt with by simply installing the game on the Deck’s SSD, so we suggest giving this a try. If it doesn’t help, maybe the next one will.
Repair game files –
The crashing issue here could also be the result of Vigor having some missing or corrupted files. In such cases, the only fix is to verify and repair the game files. To do this on the Deck, you will need to head into Vigor’s Properties settings and then switch to the Installed Files tab. After that, click on Verify integrity of game files and let the Deck do the rest of the work.
Switch to Desktop Mode –
If you are having issues playing the game in Gaming Mode then switching to Desktop Mode might help. Basically, what you need to do is press the Steam button on your Deck and then scroll down to Power. Select it and then click the Switch to Desktop option. Your Deck will now switch to Desktop Mode. Once you are in, launch the game from Steam and check if the crashes still occur or not.
Reinstall –
At times when other fixes aren’t of help, the reinstall method can be. However, do note that your progress will be lost if you follow this method. Unless your save is also in the cloud. So, if you are comfortable with this method, then simply uninstall the game from your Steam Deck and start a new download. Once the download is complete and the installation is done, launch the game and hopefully, you won’t have to face more crashes.
Well, that’s all the workarounds we have for this issue. You can also take a quick look here if Dread Delusion keeps crashing on your Steam Deck. And for more guides like this, keep following DigiStatement. Also read: Binding of Isaac crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it?
