Sucker Punch Productions, the Washington-headquartered video game developer, has created some of the best games for the PlayStation platform and still continues to do so. From Sly Cooper to the Infamous series, Sucker Punch is regarded as one of the best first-party PlayStation studios these days. And a big part of that is 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima. First released for PS4 and PS5, the game went on to receive incredible praise from both critics and fans alike and even went on to sell over 9 million units as of July 2022. Fans were waiting for quite a while for its PC port, which Sony finally released on May 16, 2024, in the form of Ghost of Tsushima DIRECTOR’S CUT. Reviews, so far have been great, but unfortunately, there are some issues with it that players really want to get rid of. In particular, standoff isn’t working properly in the game and that’s what this guide will help to fix.
This isn’t simply a PC issue. In fact, the same issue has plagued PlayStation players as well. The issue here is that at times, standoff in the game either doesn’t start or the buttons simply don’t work. So, is there a fix for this issue? Well, let’s go ahead and find out.
Ghost of Tsushima standoff not working: How to fix it
Here are some workarounds which will help you resolve this problem. We have some common workarounds and others exclusive for PC and PS. Try these and hopefully one of them will be of help to you.
Restart –
Before trying out other workarounds, we highly recommend that you use the restart method. That’s what some players have suggested, so give it a try. Simply restart the game and if that doesn’t help, you can try doing the same with your PC or PS5 too. If the restart method isn’t of help, then switch to a different workaround.
Enable Toggle Button Holds –
Enabling the Toggle Button Holds option in the settings can also be of great help in dealing with this standoff problem. Essentially, turning on this option allows you to press a button only once instead of holding it down in order to perform certain actions. So, once you have enabled it, you wouldn’t need to hold down the Y or the Triangle button until the enemy moves and then release it. Instead, pressing the button once will do. Now, to turn on this option, you need to open the in-game settings, switch to Options, and then Accessibility. In there, you will find the Toggle Button Holds option. Enable it and then close the settings.
Wait for the enemy to move close to you –
As stated here, you should wait for the enemy to move near you. Hold the Triangle or the Y button only when the enemy is facing you and slightly move. Then release the button only when the opponent strikes. Pressing the button before this will make you lose the stand-off, so be mindful of this. Additionally, try to enter into a standoff by switching to complete stealth while you are on foot.
Update –
Updating is a big help in dealing with issues such as this. So, check if there’s an update available for the game, and if there’s indeed one, then download and install that update. Do the same with both your system (PC or console) and controller too.
Reload save –
You can also try reloading your current save. It’s a common fix for issues like this, so do try it once. Additionally, starting a new save and finding out if standoffs work in that save can also be quite helpful. If the standoffs work in the new save, then the issue is most likely with your previous save. And if the standoffs are still a problem, then the issue lies somewhere else.
Reinstall –
This is a very drastic measure, but you will have to use it if other workarounds mentioned here don’t work out for you. Some players had success resolving this issue after reinstalling the game so it could prove useful here too. First, uninstall the game from your PC or console and then start a new download. Wait for the download to finish and the installation to be complete. Once that’s done, launch the game and check if you can enter standoff without any issues.
For PC
Set the game to run in Exclusive Fullscreen and at 60Hz (Dev suggested workaround) –
Nixxes support has determined this issue to be caused by high frame rates and as such has suggested running the game in Exclusive Fullscreen and at 60Hz. You can change both of the settings by opening the in-game settings (Options), switching to Display, and applying the stated settings there. Do this and hopefully the issue will be there no more. If it does, use the next workaround.
Use M&K –
For some players, the cause of the issue has been their controller. Switching to mouse and keyboard helped bypass this issue. So, if you happen to be using a controller to play the game on your PC, consider using the mouse and keyboard and then check if the issue persists.
Jump after standoff cutscene –
It’s quite a strange fix, but it has worked for a player, so there’s no harm in trying it once. Basically, all you need to do is perform a jump after the standoff cutscene and that should fix this issue. However, if it doesn’t, then you can move on to another fix.
Enable Steam Input –
A player shared that this issue is caused by disabling Steam Input and not using the official Suck Punch controls layout. So, if you want, you can try doing the opposite of the same thing and see if it helps. Start by going to your Steam Library and right-clicking on the game. Next, select Properties and switch to Controller. On the right side, you will find the Override for Ghost of Tsushima option with a drop-down menu next to it. Click on the drop-down menu and select Enable Steam Input. Following this, switch to the official Suck Punch controls layout.
For PS
Disable Simplified Mini-Game Controls and Toggle Button Holds –
This is a pretty old workaround, but it might still work. Put simply, u/everslain faced an issue with standoffs not working as intended and fixed it by disabling both Simplified Mini-Game Controls and the Toggle Button Holds option in the settings. If you have both of these options enabled, go to in-game settings, switch to Options > Accessibility, and disable them both.
Fast travel to a different place –
Another fix for this issue seems to be using the fast travel feature. As stated here, you just need to fast travel from where you are to another location and then promptly return to your original location. Now, see if the standoff prompt is back or not. If it isn’t, then you will need to try something else.
Complete your abandoned missions –
A player was able to get back standoffs after finishing their previously abandoned missions. So, if you haven’t finished certain duels, then we highly encourage you to go back and complete them.
Well, that’s all the workarounds we have for this issue right now. You can also take a quick look here if your PlayStation portal is lagging or having issues.
