May 9th, 2024, was certainly a pretty special day for video games. The video gaming world saw the release of some of the best games of the year in just one single day. And all of them happen to be indie titles. On that day, we got SFB Games’ Crow Country, Double Dagger Studio’s Little Kitty, Big City, Sunset Visitor’s 1000xResist, and, of course, the subject of this article, Animal Well. Developed by Shared Memory and published by Bigmode, Animal Well is available on PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PS5. It’s receiving incredible reviews from critics and fans alike and could possibly turn out to be this year’s one of the best, if not the best, indie titles. While the game is currently available on Steam for PC, many in the community seem to be quite curious about a GOG release of the game.
Besides Steam and Epic Games, GOG is also another popular digital video game storefront. Released back in 2008, it’s owned by CD Projekt, who you might know as the developers of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series of games. A major reason why GOG is so popular is because all the games available there are sold without any DRM. Plus, it’s great for older games. While Steam is a great platform, having the choice to download Animal Well from GOG is something many players would certainly appreciate. So, is there an Animal Well GOG release date? Well, let’s go ahead and find out.
Animal Well GOG Release Date: Will it be available
At the time of publishing this, there’s no GOG release date for Animal Well. Quite unfortunate news for fans who prefer using GOG versions of games. Players have asked countless times about this, but all the replies so far to those questions haven’t been confident on a GOG release. Last year itself, on January 9, 2023, a fan posted a question on the Steam Discussion forum about whether there would be a GOG release as well. Billy Basso, the solo developer behind Animal Well, simply replied – “Maybe someday”.
A similar question about a GOG release was asked on the ask-the-devs-well channel of the official Discord server. This time, Dan Adelma, the business & marketing guy for the game, replied to that question with this: “Not at launch for sure, but possibly later. But then again possibly not”.
As evidenced by these two statements, it’s safe to say that the possibilities of a GOG release are 50-50. And that’s to be expected when you only have a solo-dev working on a game. A single person can only do so much at a time. Plus, with the release of Animal Well, there are surely other things higher up on the priority list than a GOG release of the game. There’s certainly a good amount of demand for it, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the developer to decide whether he wants to pursue a GOG release or focus on other things. If Bigmode does announce a GOG release for Animal Well, then we will be sure to let our readers know all about it. Until then, you will have to suffice with enjoying Animal Well via Steam.
