Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) steam deck controller not working How to fix it

The Elder Scrolls franchise is iconic and Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) stands as a monumental entry, inviting fans to explore the sprawling world of Tamriel in an online multiplayer experience. This MMORPG brings the rich lore and vast landscapes of the Elder Scrolls universe to life, allowing players to explore, quest, and engage in both PvE and PvP activities. However, the transition to the handheld gaming experience of the Steam Deck has presented challenges for some players, specifically regarding controller functionality issues. So, in this guide, we’ll share potential solutions to address the concern of the controller not working on the Steam Deck while playing ESO.

While The Elder Scrolls Online may not be officially designated as “Deck Verified” or recognized as explicitly playable on Steam Deck, the device’s flexibility has empowered players to find workarounds, enabling them to run the game on the handheld. However, this adaptability comes with its own set of challenges. Some have encountered obstacles, notably issues of controller functionality. So, we have shared some workarounds regarding the same.

Now, while there are workarounds, it’s important to know that there isn’t one guaranteed fix that works for everyone. So, you might need to try different solutions to get the controller working seamlessly on the Steam Deck.

Restart and try Desktop mode

First, try restarting your Steam Deck; this basic step can sometimes refresh system processes and resolve glitches affecting the controller. Alternatively, switching to Desktop Mode might provide a different perspective on how the system interacts with the game, potentially addressing controller-related issues.

Accessibility settings

A workaround for addressing controller issues involves enabling accessibility mode on the Deck. Instead of navigating through a series of complex steps, users can simply access the settings and activate accessibility mode. Also, refrain from enabling accessibility mode until you reach the character select screen and choose your country. Utilize mouse controls for navigation during this stage, proceed to the settings, and then enable accessibility mode.

Launch Commands

For this workaround, switch to gamepad mode and navigate to the game’s properties. In the General tab, under “Launch options”, input the command “PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command%”. Upon opening the game, clicking the Steam button and closing the launcher can get the controller to work again.

Gamepad Setting Adjustment

For an additional workaround, locate the settings and controller icon on the right, click “Controller”, and above the view layout and edit layout options, choose your template and switch it to “Gamepad with mouse (or joystick) trackpad”. This adjustment can provide an alternative configuration that might help address controller-related issues and enhance the gaming experience on the Steam Deck.

Try other Proton versions

Experimenting with different Proton versions is the next workaround to try. To do this, just navigate to the game’s properties in Steam, access the Compatibility tab, and select an alternative Proton version. Try out all the available versions to see if any version solves the controller problem.

Well, those were the workarounds that could potentially solve the controller issues on the Steam Deck while playing ESO. We hope this guide was helpful.
