Starfield: How to respec Character

In just a few more days, Starfield will finally be available for all players on Xbox Series X/S and Windows. Scheduled for a September 6, 2023, official release, lots of players are excitedly waiting to get their hands on the game. However, many have already started playing Starfield, as the game was made available via early access to those who bought the Premium Edition. Starfield is a massive game, one that has been referred to as “Skyrim in space”. And Bethesda fans would know just how expansive and overwhelming that can be. It’s impossible to learn every possible thing about Starfield in a short amount of time, and that’s where guides come into play. This guide, in particular, will focus on respecing and share details on how to respec characters in Starfield.

For the uninitiated, respecing in video games refers to the resetting or redistribution of skill points. It’s mostly prevalent in single-player games; however, it isn’t exclusive to them since multiplayer games feature respecing too. Games such as the recently released Armored Core 6 and Diablo 4 allow respecing, and as such, players want to know if Starfield offers this feature as well. So, how can you respec in Starfield? Let’s find out!

This is going to come as a big disappointment to many players, as Starfield doesn’t come with a respec feature at all. Once you select a particular skill for your character, you cannot reset it. So, whenever you level up, choose the skill you want to unlock carefully, as it will affect your entire playthrough, mostly during the initial phase. Not being able to respec your player character, in an RPG of all places, is indeed a letdown for some, but Bethesda had a good enough reason to do so. Starfield doesn’t have level caps or maximum levels, which means you will eventually get to unlock every skill in the game.

As of now, Starfield features over 80 skills, with each having four levels. All in all, it will be a while before you finish leveling the whole skill tree. Now, since you will eventually unlock every skill available in due time, we believe that Bethesda deemed it unnecessary to add a respec option.

But looking at other Bethesda games from the past, not everything is set in stone. Skyrim, Bethesda’s most beloved game, didn’t have the respec feature during its launch. However, the Dragonborn DLC eventually added it to the game. And Fallout 76, the previous big title from Bethesda Game Studios, also had a respec option right from the get-go. At the end of the day, it’s up to the developers to decide if they want to introduce a feature like Respec in Starfield. If there’s a high enough demand from the community, we are confident that the developers will try to add such an option either through a future update or DLC. Lastly, there’s always the modding route. But that one is only for PC players.
