The full release of Starfield is right around the corner, but if you have the premium edition, you get to try your hands on the early access version. Now, as it is with early access, there are bound to be some bugs. That brings us to the topic of this article: the failed to create a save file issue that many players have reported facing. Well, keep reading to know if there is a fix for it.
So, many players have reported an issue with saving their progress in the Starfield game. This problem manifests as a “Failed to create save file” error, preventing players from saving their game. Due to this bug, players are unable to use any of the save options, including autosave, manual save, and even quick save. With that said, let us see if there are any fixes available for this issue.
Starfield Failed to Create Save File Issue: Is there any fix yet
As of now, there is no official fix for this issue. On the bright side, players who have encountered this issue have shared some working workarounds to fix it. Well, here are some of the solutions and workarounds suggested by the community. Just keep in mind that these are not guaranteed fixes.
Check for Controlled Folder Access
Many players have found success by disabling the Controlled Folder Access option in Windows. This was by far the most effective way of fixing the issue. Now, you can do this by following the steps given below:
- Select the Start menu, then go to Settings.
- In the Settings window, click on Update & Security.
- Within Update & Security, find and select Windows Security.
- In the Windows Security window, click on Virus & Threat Protection.
- Under the Virus & Threat Protection settings, click on Manage Settings.
- Locate the Controlled Folder Access section, then click on Manage Controlled Folder Access.
- Toggle the Controlled Folder Access setting to On if it’s currently off, or vice versa if it’s already on.
After making the changes, go back to Steam, launch the game, and check whether in-game saves work now.
Verify OneDrive Settings
Another thing that many players noticed was that OneDrive’s automatic backup of the “Documents” folder might interfere with the game’s save functionality. To address this, here are the steps you need to take:
- Make a local backup of your important files in the “Documents” folder.
- Disable OneDrive syncing for the “Documents” folder.
- Restore the default target for your local “Documents” folder.
Note: While we are talking about cloud storage, we recommend uninstalling or temporarily disabling cloud storage sync services like Google Drive and OneDrive, as they might alter the file paths or permissions, causing issues.
Try a Different Windows Account/Run as Admin
Creating a new local Windows account with default settings might help identify if the issue is account-specific. Some apps or settings may interfere with game functionality, even if they haven’t caused issues in the past. Also, make sure that you run the game with administrator privileges. To do this, right-click on the game’s executable file and select “Run as administrator”.
Whitelist the game
Now, if you are using any antivirus software or Windows firewall, it may sometimes block the game from running properly. To fix this, you need to add Starfield’s executable file to the whitelist of your antivirus software or Windows firewall. Doing so should enable the game to save your in-game progress, which might have been blocked.
Verify Game Files
You can also try verifying the game files of Starfield to make sure that corrupted files aren’t the cause of this issue. So, what you need to do is go to the Steam client, select Library, right-click on Starfield, and select Properties. In this new window, find the Installed Files tab, select it, and click on the Verify Integrity of Game Files option. Once the scan is complete, launch the game and check whether the issue persists.
Well, those are some workarounds that you can try to fix the Failed to Create Save File error. We hope that with the game’s full release, the developers will get rid of these issues.
