How to fix Elden Ring Controller & Gamepad not working issue

Elden Ring is one of the most ambitious souls-like games that emphasized more on an open-world hub, compared to linear level from other FromSoftware titles. Whether you prefer punishing combat with increased difficulty, memorable lore, beautiful graphics, or mount combat, it has everything and should be on your library if you enjoy souls games like Bloodborne or Dark Souls.

The game has finally been released on multiple platforms and has become one of the most played games of all time. However, not everyone is having a smooth experience in-game as the game has a few issues of its own that are causing a lot of trouble for the players. Issues like random FPS drops, invisible enemies, and the game not recognizing the controller or gamepad are some notable ones. If you’ve plugged in your controller and Elden Ring is failing to recognize it, not to worry as we’ve mentioned a couple of workarounds that you can try to fix the issue. Continue reading the article to know more.

How to fix Elden Ring Controller & Gamepad not working issue

The reason for Elden Ring’s controller issue.

The main reason for games that get released often and have errors manifesting out of nowhere have something to do with devs not fixing the parameters that serve as an intended function. Sometimes they can get messed up during the development process which results in errors. Dark Souls 1 also had a few issues similar to Elden Ring that took devs quite an effort to fix, so it’s quite normal. If it’s something devs don’t fix, fans always manage to come up with workarounds and that is the case for this controller issue of Elder Ring as well. We’ve listed a few workarounds for you to try so consider reading this article till the end.

How to fix the controller or gamepad issue in Elden Ring?

We’ve mentioned a few things that’ll help you get the controller working in Elden Ring and it will be quite easy if you followed the steps mentioned below in the article correctly.

Configure the controller via Steam

To configure your controller, click on Steam in the top left corner of the Steam Client and then click on “Settings”. Click on the Controller option and then click on “General Controller Settings”. Now, click on Continue and you’ll be sent to the Controller Settings window. If you’re using an Xbox controller, check the Xbox Configuration Support option and the same goes for the Playstation controller as well. Your controller should be detected below if you have plugged it in. If you’re using a generic controller, then select the Generic Gamepad Configuration Support option.

Enable/Disable Steam Input

Right-click on the game in your Steam library and select “Properties”. Select the Controller tab, and under the “Override for Elden Ring” section, click on the Enable Steam Input option from the dropdown menu and then launch the game. If the controller is not responding, then you can disable it the same way and run the game to see if the controller is working or not. Try both of them and see which one works out better for you.

Open Steam in Big Picture Mode

In Steam, you can select the Big Picture Mode on the top right side of the screen so click on it and then click on Continue. In the Big Picture Mode, go to your Library and select Elden Ring, or you can click on the Games option and select Elden Ring and click on Manage game. Under the Steam Input option, click on the Controller Tab and select”Forced On” and click on Ok. Launch the game and see if the game is recognizing the controller. If not, do the same again, but this time, select the “Forced Off” option and see which one is working for you.

Connect the controller before starting the game.

You must always make sure that your controller is plugged in successfully to your PC before starting Elden Ring. Also, disable additional controllers that are plugged in and unplug all the USB devices. After this, check if the error persists in Elden Ring.
