What does animal preference mean in Stardew Valley?

Ever since Stardew Valley’s full release in 2016, many unique and great farm sims have come up but SV still stands top. From the amazing OST to simple yet rewarding gameplay, Stardew Valley keeps on being the go-to game for players new to the farm-sim genre. This guide will certainly be of help to those who are new to the game and want to know what exactly animal preference is referring to.

ConcernedApe, the dev behind Stardew Valley, has been nothing short of amazing when it comes to keeping the game refreshing. Over the years, Stardew Valley has received several major updates or DLCs, all available for free. Even the upcoming 1.6 update is entirely free. New players, especially those with some interest in the farm-sim genre, are surely going to enjoy Stardew Valley a lot. And to help you understand every aspect of the game, we have shared all the details regarding what animal preference means in Stardew Valley.

What does animal preference mean in Stardew Valley?

What does animal preference mean in Stardew Valley?

Well, as the name itself suggests, animal preference is simply the animal of your choice that you would like to keep as a pet. When you start the game for the first time or start a new save, you will be asked to select a preferred animal in the character creation screen. Currently, you can only choose between a cat or a dog.

You automatically don’t get your preferred animal at the start of the game. In fact, you need to earn 1000g first. Once you have that amount, the game will play a cutscene where Marnie will show up at your farm with your preferred animal. Now the game does allow you to say no to adoption, so you can do that if you don’t want to take care of a pet. And if you do, go ahead and name it. You can only name a pet once, so think hard and carefully.

Note that Marnie will only show up on either the first sunny Wednesday or Friday morning in the Spring of Year One. Furthermore, you need to exit your house sometime between 6 AM to 9:30 AM in order to trigger this event. Additionally, the game will automatically trigger the event, even if you are unable to earn 1000g by the 20th of Spring of Year One for some reason.

Unfortunately, unlike other things in the game, the pet system is currently not that deep. All you can do is raise pet relationships by interacting with them and filling up the water bowls if they appear to be empty. Your pets can die, so you don’t even have the option to feed them.

And that’s all you need to know about this topic. By the way, if you want to know what’s coming with the 1.6 update of the game, take a look at this guide.
