The Outlast Trials: How to Cap In-game FPS

The Outlast series of games has been one of the best horror games to come out in the past decade. And on May 18, 2023, we saw the release of the third installment in the series, called The Outlast Trials. Developed and published by Red Barrels, the game is under Steam’s Early Access Program and will remain so until the end of 2023. But that release window could get extended if development demands it. So far, players have been enjoying the game a lot, but they do have some issues with it. Being an early access title, there are several essential features missing in the game, and one of them is the setting to cap maximum FPS. However, there is a workaround you can try to cap the in-game FPS.

Developers include the option to limit the maximum FPS in a game for several reasons. Limiting FPS can reduce heat consumption while also reducing screen tearing. Suffice to say, this is a great feature for players. So, how do you cap in-game fps in The Outlast Trials since there is no option available? Let’s find out!

While the in-game settings don’t have an FPS cap option, you can still lock the FPS to a certain value through the Control Panel of your GPU software. Do note that this requires you to have either a Nvidia GPU or an AMD one.

For Nvidia –

Open Nvidia Control Panel by right-clicking on the desktop screen and selecting “Nvidia Control Panel” from the drop-down option/menu. Next, navigate to 3D Settings, and under it, you will see three sub-options: Adjust image settings with preview, Manage 3D settings, and Configure Surround, PhysX. Make sure to select the Manage 3D Settings option.

Now, there will be a Global and Program Settings window on the right side of the screen. Go to Global Settings, and search for the “Max Frame Rate” sub-option. It’s located above “Monitor Technology” and below “Low Latency Mode”. Select the “Max Frame Rate” option, and adjust the slider to a certain FPS value that you want your games to be capped at. Click on “Ok” when done. This will limit all of your games to the FPS you have selected. But if you want to do this only for one game(i.e. The Outlast Trials), then instead of “Global Settings”, switch to “Program Settings”. Browse and choose “The Outlast Trials” option under the “Select a program to customize:” option. And then follow the same method you did for limiting frame rate. Click on OK and you are done.

For AMD –

Open AMD Radeon software first. Next, choose the Gaming tab and add “The Outlast Trials” by using the “Add A Game” option. Do so only if the game doesn’t appear under the installed list. Next, select the game, and a new window will open with lots of settings. Scroll down until you find “Radeon Chill”. Enable the option and set a minimum and maximum FPS limit. You should also turn off “Radeon Enhanced Sync”. Also, select “On” for the “Wait for Vertical Refresh” option. Now, open the game to check if the frame rate is capped.
