Starfield Character Body Keeps Changing Bug: Is there any fix yet

Starfield Character Body Keeps Changing Bug: Is there any fix yet

Bethesda’s Starfield has been out for quite some time, and while the hype has subsided a bit, it’s nowhere near over. At the time of writing, the game had a 24-hour peak player count of 52,145 spacefarers alone. Suffice it to say that Starfield has shown no signs of stopping anytime soon. Now, one of the many things that affected the game during its launch was its performance issues. While Bethesda has fixed a lot of those, many bugs are still plaguing the game. The character body changing bug is a major one that many are dealing with.

If you aren’t aware of what this is, this bug makes it so that after launching Starfield, players will find that their character’s body type has changed. Some had their player character’s body type change from slim to fat and vice versa. It’s kind of a funny bug, but nonetheless, it needs to be addressed soon. So, is there a fix yet? Continue reading to find out!!

Bethesda has yet to fix this bug since they haven’t even acknowledged it. Don’t worry, though. You can try the following workarounds for now:

Change your character’s gender in NG+ –

This particular workaround comes courtesy of u/Bellefutian. Players will need to be in NG+ (New Game Plus) in order to try this workaround. And mind you, you will only need to do it once per NG+ run. So, what you need to do is:

  • Head to any Enhance Store and change your character’s gender. So, if you chose your character’s gender as male at the start, change it to female, and vice versa.
  • Once you have confirmed your changes, make a hard save of your progress, and then close the game.
  • Now, launch the game and load your save. Find the nearest Enhance Store to revert back to the character’s gender. This is also where you should edit your character’s weight and face, if you want. Don’t forget to save your progress once you are satisfied with your changes.

Now, the bug won’t occur again in the current NG+ run. However, if you start a new run, you will have to repeat the given steps.

Use console command –

Like most issues in Starfield, this one can be fixed by using the console command. Do note that using the console command will mark your current run as modified and disable achievements. However, you can fix that by downloading the Achievement Enabler mod from NexusMod. Also, console players will not be able to use this workaround since they don’t get access to console commands. Anyway, what you need to do is:

  • Press the tilde (~) key on your keyboard and open the console command.
  • Next, type in “showlooksmenu player 2”, as explained here.
  • Choose your preferred body type and close the console command.

Validate files –

Players can even try validating files in order to deal with this bug. This will check your game files for any issues and fix them accordingly. To do this,

  • Open Steam and click on Library.
  • Now, right-click on the game and select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
  • After the process is over, restart your PC.

Reload a previous save –

You can also try reloading one of your previous saves before you encounter the bug, and then check if the issue persists. Reload the save that happens to be closest to your current progress, as it makes for less backtracking.

Update the game –

Make sure to keep your game updated if you don’t want to face bugs and errors frequently. So, if you are behind on updates, go download them, and after that, start the game to see if the issue persists.

We hope that at least one of these workarounds has been able to help you fix this bug. By the way, if you are experiencing issues with removing dead NPC bodies from your ship, check out this guide.
