Sons of the Forest (SotF) Crashing after Patch Update 07: Possible Fixes

Sons of the Forest (SotF) crashing

While there’s no official update from the developers on the issue yet, you can try using the following fixes to solve it.

Verify the integrity of game files

If one or more game files are missing or corrupt, then it can trigger this crashing problem in Sons of the Forest. You can verify the integrity of your game files to counter this. Follow these undermentioned steps to perform this task:

  • Launch Steam and go to your Steam Library.
  • From the list of installed games, locate Sons of the Forest, and then right-click on it.
  • Select Properties from the drop-down menu. Then, click on Local Files.
  • Here you can find the option that says “Verify integrity of game files”. Clicking on this will prompt Steam to run a scan and replace the missing or corrupt files. Wait for the process to complete and then launch the game to check if it runs properly.

Run Sons of the Forest as administrator

You can try running the game as an administrator and check if it still crashes.

  • Head to the game installation directory, and locate the .exe file for Sons of the Forest.
  • Once you find the executable file, right-click on it to open the context menu.
  • Here, click on Properties, and then go to the Compatibility tab.
  • Locate the option that says “Run this program as an administrator”, and tick the corresponding checkbox.
  • Select Apply, and then launch the game to see if it’s crashing.

Update your GPU drivers

If your GPU driver is not up-to-date, it can trigger several issues in-game including crashes. To update your GPU drivers, follow these instructions –

  • Press the Windows+ X key together to open the Quick Link Menu, and then select Device Manager.
  • Scroll down, and click on the Display Adapters option.
  • From the list, locate the GPU (dedicated GPU) that you’re using, and right-click on it.
  • From the drop-down menu, select the Update Driver option.
  • Choose “Search automatically for drivers”, and wait until the process is completed.
  • Once done, launch the game again and check if the issue persists.

Note that you can also update your GPU driver by using the support software of your GPU manufacturer. Otherwise, you can visit the official website of the manufacturer to download the latest updates.

Disable FreeSync in AMD Adrenaline (for AMD GPU Users)

Reportedly, disabling FreeSync in AMD Adrenaline can troubleshoot this error for you. In order to carry out this task, follow these steps:

  • Right-click on your desktop screen and click on AMD Radeon Settings from the drop-down menu.
  • You can find the Gaming tab on the left-hand side of your screen. Click on it, and then locate Sons of the Forest.
  • Once you find the game, click on it. Then, locate the Radeon FreeSync option under the Display tab. Note that it can also be found under the General tab depending on the AMD Radeon software version you’re using.
  • Now, simply toggle off FreeSync, and launch your game to check if the issue persists.

Update DirectX and Visual C++ Redistributales

Updating your DirectX version is another fix that you can try to solve this problem. You can update your system’s DirectX version by following these steps –

  • Open your Start menu, and type dxdiag in the search bar. Hit enter, and click on the dxdiag option from the search results.
  • On the screen, you can check the DirectX version that you’re currently using. Check whether it is Dx12.
  • Now, return to your desktop screen and press the Windows+ I key together to open the Windows settings window.
  • Locate and click on the Update & Security option. Then, select Windows Update from the tab on the left-hand side.
  • Click on Check for Updates. If there are any recent updates available, Windows will run a check and automatically install those. This includes DirectX updates as well.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process, restart your PC, and launch the game to check if the issue is solved.

If the issue persists, download and install the latest DirectX version from here. Also, you can download the latest Visual C++ files from here.

Reinstall Sons of the Forest

If nothing works, then the last workaround that you can try is uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Once uninstalled, try installing it on a different drive (preferably an SSD) to improve your chances of fixing the error.

Well, these were some of the workarounds that you can try for troubleshooting the Sons of the Forest (SotF) crashing issue after update patch 07. If the problem persists, then you will probably need to wait until the release of the next hotfix or patch update from the developers.
