The 25th instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is all set to be released on September 3, 2021 worldwide. Shang-Chi has often played second fiddle to Marvel’s other Kung Fu and martial arts-focused character, Iron Fist. However, the former is the one getting the honour of being an official Marvel Cinematic Universe Character, as the rights to Iron Fist remain in contention with Netflix, who have already established the Iron Fist’s character quite well. In this article, we will be taking a look at the possibility of a Shang-Chi game being developed, and when it could be coming out.
As I just mentioned, Shang-Chi has barely ever been more popular than the Iron Fist, but this year and maybe the first few months of 2022 mark a rare period of time when the interest in Shang-Chi is far more than it has ever been, and this could herald a new era of massive popularity for the character as he is slowly made a staple part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It would not be the first time that Marvel tries to use the period of increased interest around a character due to an upcoming movie to announce a video game title featuring that character, and thus catch the eyes of a large player base.
If indeed such a game is green-lighted for development, it could be seen as a way to make hack n’ slash games re-enter the mainstream media attention. Ever since the new God of War became more focused on storytelling and action-adventure elements, the burden of keeping the genre alive for casual gamers has fallen upon Dante of Devil May Cry. Don’t get me wrong, hack n’ slashers are still very much alive in the Indie market, but not nearly as much in the mainstream. Considering Shang-Chi’s heritage and his focus on melee combat, there could not be a better character to develop another big-budget, AAA hack n’ slash game.
Seeing as we are yet to see official confirmation for a Shang-Chi game, we could be looking at a late 2023 or early 2024 release for it. Let’s hope Marvel chooses to cash in on the increased popularity of the character at the moment and gives us an official announcement and maybe even some proof of concept footage.
