Red Dead Redemption 1 Error Code C0000005 How to fix it

Red Dead Redemption 1 has finally made its way to PC, bringing one of Rockstar’s most beloved classics to a whole new audience. While this is an exciting development for fans, playing on PC can sometimes come with its own set of issues. One such issue is Error Code C0000005, which has been preventing players from enjoying the game smoothly. In this guide, we’ve shared some methods to fix this error and get you back to roaming the Wild West without interruptions.

Since Red Dead Redemption 1 is a port of an older console game, it’s expected that some compatibility issues may arise on modern PCs. While the port has been optimized for today’s systems, the age of the original game means that certain errors might still crop up. Fortunately, there are a few tried-and-true solutions for dealing with this error.

Keep in mind that there isn’t a single, guaranteed fix for Error Code C0000005, as different players may encounter it due to various factors like hardware configurations and software incompatibility. However, there are several potential workarounds that have proven effective for many users. You can try these methods one by one to see which one works best for you.

First Steps

The first step to try is to simply restart the game and your PC. Often, a fresh start can clear minor issues. Additionally, try running the game as an administrator to give it full access to system resources. Right-click on the game’s executable file, select Run as administrator, and see if that resolves the problem. If not, running the game in different compatibility modes can also help. For this, right-click on the game’s executable file, select Properties, and then go to the Compatibility tab. Here, select the “Run this program with Compatibility for” option and then choose Windows 7 or 8. Once done, press Ok, and then launch the game.

Updates

Another essential troubleshooting step is to check for any updates for both Windows and Red Dead Redemption. Ensuring your operating system and game are up-to-date can often resolve compatibility issues and bugs. For Windows, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and download any available updates. For the game, check for updates via the platform where it was purchased (like Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher).

Verify Files

Next, verifying the integrity of the game files can help identify and replace any missing or corrupted files. On Steam, right-click on Red Dead Redemption in your library, go to Properties > Installed Files, and click Verify Integrity of Game Files. This process will scan and automatically replace any problematic files, which could resolve the error and get you back to playing smoothly.

Update GPU drivers

Outdated graphics drivers can sometimes conflict with new PC ports. Keeping your graphics drivers up to date can enhance compatibility with the game. Go to the official website for your graphics card manufacturer (either NVIDIA or AMD). Download the latest drivers available for your GPU model. Run the installer and follow the prompts to update your drivers. After installation, restart your PC and try launching the game.

Disable Afterburner/RTSS and Riv Tuner

Many players use MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) for monitoring and overclocking their hardware, but these programs can sometimes interfere with certain games, causing crashes, freezes, or errors like C0000005. By disabling these tools before launching the game, you remove potential conflicts that might arise from the way these applications manage system resources or display in-game overlays.

Install Crash Fix mod (for RivaTuner users)

If the issue persists, you can try installing the dedicated Crash Fix mod by lilcino. This mod fixes the ACCESS_VIOLATION (C0000005) code error in RDR 1. How to install it? Well, simply download the mod from Nexus Mods or by clicking here. After this, extract the files and then paste the RDR.exe.cfg’ file to C:\Program Files (x86)\RivaTuner Statistics Server\Profiles.

Create a New Windows User Account

For some players, creating a new user account in Windows fixed the issue. To create a new user on Windows, open Settings (press Windows + I), then go to Accounts > Family & other users. Under Other users, click Add someone else to this PC, then select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information and Add a user without a Microsoft account. Enter a username, set a password (optional), and click Next. Once created, log out of your current account, switch to the new one, and try launching Red Dead Redemption to see if the error is resolved.

Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ and .NET Framework

Missing or outdated runtime libraries can be a common culprit for errors with older games ported to modern systems. Red Dead Redemption may require specific versions of these dependencies, such as the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable package and the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0. Reinstalling these runtimes can be a reliable way to ensure the game has all the necessary files it needs to run smoothly on your PC. You can find them in the game’s installation directory, inside the Redistributables folder.

Reinstall the game

As a last resort, consider reinstalling Red Dead Redemption if other fixes haven’t resolved the error code C0000005. Reinstalling eliminates any lingering issues from corrupted files. To do this, uninstall the game through your platform’s library (such as Steam or Rockstar Games Launcher), restart your PC, and then reinstall it. While time-consuming, this step can resolve persistent issues and provide a clean slate for the game to run more reliably.

With these workarounds, we hope you were able to resolve this pesky error. Now before you leave, don’t forget to bookmark DigiStatement for more guides and news like this on all things gaming. Also, click here to find out how to earn money fast in Rdr 1.
