Protontricks command not found on Steam Deck

Valve’s Steam Deck is a popular handheld PC that operates on Linux. There’s a host of SteamOS/Linux-supported games that you can play on this platform. However, players don’t certainly feel satisfied with just that. This is the sole reason why Deck users continue to search for games that aren’t necessarily Wine or Proton compatible to play on their Decks. Protontricks is a popular utility tool in this regard, which allows players to download and play even non-Stean games on the Deck. However, in a recent issue, Steam Deck users are failing to use Protontricks for their favorite non-Stean games. Since you’re here, we assume that you’re facing this Protontricks command not found on Steam Deck issue as well. Keep reading this guide till the end to find out the potential fixes for the problem.

Protontricks is an immaculate utility tool that most players prefer to use to run non-Steam games on the Deck. The popularity of this tool is so great that most players prefer it over the pre-installed Winetricks that come with the Deck. With this amount of popularity, it becomes a problem if Protontricks faces such errors. This makes players search for possible fixes to the Protontricks command not found issue on Steam Deck immediately. So, how exactly can you solve this issue? Let’s find out!

Protontricks Command Not Found on Steam Deck Issue: How to Fix?

Protontricks command not found on Steam Deck

The issue with Protontricks command failing to work is something that multiple players have experienced on their Decks. We understand how frustrating this can be. So, what causes these Protontricks commands to fail? Some people try to change the arguments of the command to see if it works. However, this, more often than not, doesn’t work. So, in such a scenario, what can you do? Let’s find out!

Open a New Terminal

Reddit user self_me described that if you’re facing this issue on your Deck, you need to open a different terminal and try another command. You can try the following command and see if your issue is solved – “flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks“. This is the most common fix to get Protontricks to work. Reddit user Tsuki4735 suggested this step as well and it has helped people fix the issue.

Note: Since you attempted using a Protontricks command, which showed you the error in the first place, we assume that you already know how to open the terminal. For people who are new to Protontricks, opening the terminal is very easy. On the Steam desktop mode, tap on the Application Launcher at the bottom left corner of your screen. Go to System and open the Konsole option. This will open up your terminal konsole.

Fix Shared by yacinbm on GitHub

There is another way to fix this Protontricks command not found issue that you can try. This was shared by yacinbm on GitHub.

  • For this fix, you have to first find the Steam ID of the game you’re facing the issue with.
  • Then, switch to desktop mode, and from the game folder, you need to delete the prefix folder. You can find this folder under this path: “~/.steam/steamapps/compatdata/gameID/pfx“.
  • Then, install Protonup-QT from the Discover app and launch it.
  • Click on Add and search for the latest Proton GE version. Once found, install it.
  • Restart your Steam Deck and go to your Library.
  • Locate the game you were having trouble with and highlight it.
  •  Press the three-dot button on your Deck and go to Properties.
  • Go to the Compatibility tab and select “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool“. Then, choose the Proton GE version that you just installed.
  • Go back to the Properties menu and now open the General tab.
  • Under Launch Options, type this command – “WINEDLLOVERRIDES=”dwrite=n,b” %command%“.
  • Launch the game and let it crash. The game will crash here to rebuild the prefix folder.
  • Now, bring up your terminal and use the following command: “protontricks 244210 -q dotnet472“. After this, check if the issue persists.

Grant Access to Other Directories

After you’ve installed Protontricks, it only has access to your Steam directory at first. This can be the reason why the command isn’t working. To overcome this, you have to use the flatpak override command. So, bring up your console and use the following command: “flatpak override –user –filesystem=<PATH> com.github.Matoking.protontricks“. Note that you have to add the directory in place of <PATH>. This should allow you to use the Protontricks commands for the game. For more information on how to run Protontricks, you can refer to the manual on GitHub.

Report the Issue

If you continue to face the issue, better not wait. Report it on GitHub and see if you can find any help.

These are some of the fixes for the Protontricks command not found issue on Steam Deck. Hopefully, we were able to help you fix the problem. If you found this guide insightful, keep visiting DigiStatement for more such gaming content and guides!
