Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch is regularly brought up during conversations about the best first-person shooter games that were ever made, and with expectations as high as that, the one and true way that Blizzard Entertainment could possibly keep up the standards they set for their fans at the release of the game is by giving their base new content updates as well as unique features to help keep the bar set as high as possible and in this quest for eternal excellence, on June 9th, Blizzard announced that cross-play would be coming to the game, meaning you could now play with and against your friends as well as strangers across servers from different regions who use a different platform than you to run their Overwatch. Have a look at the official developer announcement video below.
Cross-play and cross-save are two features that go hand-in-hand and are thus often released by developers together. While cross-play removes the barriers of console and platform when playing multiplayer, cross-save allows you to carry over your progression across devices, meaning you would just have to log in to your account after getting your brand new PS5 to receive all your weapon skins and level rating and emotes on that console from your older one, be it the PS4 or a PC.
Unfortunately for us, Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that the cross-save feature is not coming to the game when cross-play comes out. A user on an online forum asked Blizzard, “Will my progression carry over between systems?” to which an employee answered, “No. While cross-play will allow you to group up with friends using other systems, no progress and collection content will be carried over between sessions on different systems.”
While this is pretty bad news, it is not the end of the possibility of cross-save coming to Overwatch. Blizzard could very well add in the feature at a later stage, seeing how they like to test every feature singularly to ensure the best experience.
We hope you’re excited to play with the new cross-play feature on Overwatch, make sure to check out our articles on how you can disable cross-play and if it will reset your stats when it comes out on Overwatch. Cheers!
