The long-awaited sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance was just recently announced on 18 April 2024 and is slated to release this year itself. Fans are pretty excited about it, as the first game in itself was Warhorse Studios’ chef d’oeuvre. Released back in 2018 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a story-driven open-world RPG where the player takes on the role of Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Set in the backdrop of medieval Bohemia, Kingdom Come: Deliverance offers a number of things, including a dynamic world where your actions will influence everything around you and a realistic open world filled with towering Castles and vast fields. Since its release in 2018, KCD has been ported to the Nintendo Switch, allowing fans to enjoy the game on the go. However, that’s not the only handheld where you can play KCD. The Steam Deck also happens to be a popular choice among many fans. Unfortunately, there’s this crashing issue that is making it somewhat annoying to run Kingdom Come: Deliverance on the Steam Deck.
KCD is yet to receive the Deck Verified badge. However, it is marked Playable by Valve as it runs without many issues on the Deck. Now, there can be a myriad of causes behind these crashing issues, ranging from Proton compatibility to the game version being outdated. However, you aren’t here to find out what’s caused this issue but rather to find a fix. And that’s what this guide will give you.
Kingdom Come Deliverance Steam Deck crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it
Players can use the following workarounds to deal with this issue. Use these and see which ones are of help in fixing this crashing problem.
Use Proton Experimental –
The very first thing that we recommend players do is to use Proton Experimental. You can do this by highlighting Kingdom Come: Deliverance from your Library and then pressing the three-line button. Next, select Properties and switch to the Compatibility section. Check the checkbox next to Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool option. Now, all that’s left to do is to select Proton Experimental from the drop-down menu located below. In case Proton Experimental doesn’t work out, you can try other Proton layers too.
Repair the game’s files –
At times, when there’s a corrupted or missing game file, it can lead to issues like this one. And the only way to deal with that is to simply verify and repair the game files. For that, you will need to select KCD from your Library and select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. After the files are verified and repaired, restart the Deck and then only launch the game.
Update –
Check if there’s an update available for Kingdom Come: Deliverance. If there’s one, download and install that update. Furthermore, we also recommend updating your Steam Deck, if it hasn’t been in a while.
Install KCD on the Deck’s internal memory –
If you happen to have Kingdom Come: Deliverance installed on a microSD card that’s connected to the Deck, we suggest that you uninstall it from there and reinstall it on the Deck’s internal memory. At times, doing so can help in resolving this issue, so give it a try.
Switch to Desktop Mode –
Players can also try switching to Desktop Mode in order to deal with this issue. Simply click on the Steam button on your Deck and then switch to Power. Now, tap the A button and select Switch to Desktop when the pop-up menu opens. Now that you are in Desktop Mode, open Steam and then launch Kingdom Come Deliverance.
Reinstall –
In case you are still experiencing the crashing issue, try reinstalling the game. When other workarounds don’t work, reinstalling just might. So, do that and see if the issue persists.
