The Xbox Showcase 2023 was nothing short of amazing. Especially for Microsoft Flight Simulator fans. A new Microsoft Flight Simulator game has been announced, and it has fans pretty excited and curious. The current game in the series was released back in 2020 and got high praise for its graphics and one-to-one accuracy in the real world. First started back in 1982 with Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.0, the series has since become a pioneer in the flight simulation genre. Just the sheer scale of it is astounding. Moreover, the series happens to be one of the longest-running PC video game series of all time. It’s safe to say that Microsoft takes this series very seriously. Now that this new title has been announced, fans are more than excited to try it out. MFS 2020 was already a top-notch title, and the excitement for this new one is above the charts. One thing, however, that has been bugging some players since the recent announcements is whether the upcoming title is a spin-off or a sequel to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. If you have the same doubt, this article is for you.
For the uninitiated, a spin-off game is a title that is derived from an original or mainline game. In most cases, a spin-off will focus on an entirely different aspect of the mainline game and will also most likely use a different method of gameplay or genre. Minecraft Legends and Minecraft Dungeons are excellent examples of spin-off titles. Now that you are somewhat familiar with the idea of what a spin-off title is, let’s see if Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 happens to be one.
Is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 a Sequel or Spin-off title?
It is confirmed that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is, in fact, a sequel to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. As per the official website, MFS 2024 is confirmed to be a direct sequel to MFS 2020. Even the official PC Game Pass Twitter handle has stated the same when a user had a question about whether the upcoming game was a sequel or an update for MFS 2020.
Microsoft has once again partnered with Bordeaux-based French video game developer Asobo Studio to develop the upcoming title of the MFS series. According to the announcement made by Microsoft, MFS 2024 is “powered by the significantly evolved Asobo Studio engine”. And with the sudden rise of AI capabilities in the last two years, it’s pretty much expected that this sequel will significantly blow its predecessor out of proportion.
MFS 2020 was a technical marvel in itself, but the 2024 sequel is looking to further take the series to new heights. The game will be available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox Game Pass, and Steam. However, an exact release date has yet to be announced.
Well, we hope that all your doubts have been cleared regarding whether MFS 2024 is a sequel to MFS 2020 or a spin-off title. For more such interesting reads, don’t forget to check out DigiStatement regularly.
