The lite version of any app uses less data and can be run on lower end devices Lite versions of apps are much loved as the majority of people in countries like India and other emerging nations do not have access to high end phones and fast & affordable data.
According to a recent report by mobile insights firm App Annie, In India, the Facebook Lite app had an active user base of 40 million just last month and the Messenger lite app had 13 million active users. Companies know that there are a lot of users in developing nations that still use low-end and mid-range smartphones and have lite version of their apps like Youtube’s lite version called Youtube Go, Opera Browser’s lite version called Opera Mini, etc.
Facebook which acquired Instagram back in 2012 for $1bn is now its parent company. They quietly removed the Instagram Lite app from the Play Store earlier this year in July, due to some issues they found in the app. They are now rolling out the new updated app in India in order to test and gain valuable feedback before they launch it worldwide later.
The company announced the launch of the Instagram Lite app on Wednesday at the Facebook Fuel for India event. The app will be under 2MB in size and will miss some of the main features such as Reels, IGTV and Shopping sections. The company says the new Instagram Lite app will be faster and more reliable and will have support for multiple regional languages and Hindi too. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, also announced other programs that the company have been planning for India.
