How to play Steam VR games on Meta Quest 2, 3, & Pro using Steam Link?

When it comes to VR, it’s still regarded as a niche thing. While the technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, it’s still unable to reach mainstream status. This is mainly due to two main reasons. One is the cost of a VR headset. And the other is that there aren’t that many good VR games out there, which is mainly a result of the former. However, the technology is still being developed, and games are still being made for it, albeit at a much slower pace. Currently, Steam is considered the best digital store for VR games, and as a result, many want to play SteamVR games, including Meta Quest users.

The Meta Quest line of VR headsets is developed by Reality Labs, which is a division of Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook). These headsets are one of the best ones out there when it comes to VR, competing with the likes of PlayStation’s PSVR2. While the Meta Store has some good VR games, in all honesty, it’s still miles behind Steam. And so, it’s only evident that users would want to try out SteamVR games on the much-capable VR hardware. To cater to such an audience, Valve released the official Steam Link application for the Meta Quest platforms, which allows players to access Steam games on their VR headsets without the use of any third-party software. So, continue reading to see how you can play Steam VR games on Meta Quest headsets using Steam Link.

Now, before you can start installing Steam Link, you need to do and check some things. For starters, make sure that your PC is connected to the internet via Ethernet and your headset via a 5GHz network. Furthermore, go ahead and download both Steam and SteamVR on your PC if they aren’t already installed. Players also need to ensure that the following minimum requirements are met:

  • OS: Windows 10/11
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 970/AMD Radeon R9 290 or any of the later ones
  • Headset: Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro

While the aforementioned are minimum requirements, there’s also a recommended one for a better experience.

  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 2070 or later
  • RAM: 16GB
  • A broadband connection with Wi-Fi 6/6E

Now, you can start installing Steam Link. And for that, you just need to follow the steps mentioned below:

  • Plug in your Meta Quest headset to your PC and open the Store. Type in Steam Link in the search bar and select it.
  • Now, download the Steam Link application and wait until the installation is complete.
  • After installation is done, start Steam Link and select your PC. If you are asked for a pairing code, type it in and you will enter Steam.
  • Now, all you need to do is choose the Steam VR game of your preference, download it, and play.

VR Games You Can Enjoy

If this is your first time trying out VR, here are some SteamVR games that we recommend:

Half-Life: Alyx

Arguably the best VR game out there, and one that’s developed by Valve itself. Available for $59.99, it’s the go-to game if you want something that’s of top-notch quality. Plus, it also happens to be part of the Half-Life series. So, a great narrative and incredible gameplay are automatically guaranteed.

Superhot VR

Superhot VR, as the name suggests, is the VR version of the popular indie game – Superhot. Developed by the Superhot Team, SVR is tailor-made for a great VR experience and goes for about $24.99. While not a narrative-focused game like Alyx, it more than makes up for it by giving you one of the best FPS in VR out there.

No Man’s Sky VR

For fans of Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky, you can also try out the game on VR. Exploring new and strange planets, and walking around with peculiar animals; it’s the best game to play when it comes to any space-focused game. And the best part is that you don’t need to buy a separate VR version.

And that’s all you need to know on this topic. Additionally, while we are on the topic of VR games, here’s a guide that you can use to get and play Minecraft on the Meta Quest 2.
