Well, it’s another day but the same old fatal error troubling players in different games. After being in early access for quite a while, almost 6 years, the full v1.0 version of Foundation has been released. What’s new? Well, the list is long. The developers introduced New Main Menu and Rulesets, a new Heraldry system, revamped aspirations, new Villager Residential Tiers, and much more. Along with the full release, there has been a barrage of post-release patch updates fixing various issues in-game. But it seems the fatal error has slipped through the cracks of the QA team. Anyway, if you are encountering this issue while launching the game, don’t worry. We have shared everything you need to know about this issue and how to fix it for good. So, consider reading this guide until the end.

Foundation’s recent full release has seen a surge of new players trying the game out. They are also accompanied by returning players who are curious to know what changes have been made to it. That said, with this recent surge, the number of reports regarding the game’s issues has also increased. While most are not game-breaking, the fatal error is one such error that has been the cause of frustration among many. So, how to fix it? Is there any fix available? Luckily there is.

Foundation Game Fatal Error Can’t Create Log Files Error: How to fix it

While not confirmed, some players have mentioned this issue is due to Windows 11’s automatic save of the Foundation folder to Onedrive instead of doing so in the right directory which can be accessed by the game. In short, it means that the game is unable to find the required folder needed to create the log files and therefore crashes. Fix? It’s simple as well.

To fix this issue, simply access the OneDrive directory on your PC, find the Polymorph Games folder, and copy it. Now, head over to the C drive, then open the Users folder. Here, open the folder with your username on it. Next, find and open the AppData folder. It might be hidden so make sure to enable the Show Hidden Files option via the View menu. Once inside the AppData folder, paste the Polymorph Games folder into this directory. After this, the game should launch without any issues. If the issue persists, try these workarounds:

Disable Antivirus

It is possible that your system’s antivirus software is to blame for this issue’s occurrence. Maybe the antivirus has flagged the game as malware and blocked its access. To rule out this possibility, first, disable the antivirus and then launch the game. If the issue no longer occurs, then it is due to the antivirus. Now, there are two things you can do. You can either disable the antivirus program every time you play the game and then re-enable it later, or you can add the game’s .exe to the exception list.

Controlled Folder Access

This workaround involves adding the game’s installation folder to allow Full Access. How? Follow these steps:

  • First, open the Start menu and head over to the Windows Settings. Now, click on Update & Security (Windows 10) or Privacy & Security (Windows 11) and then click on “Windows Security” on the left-hand side.
  • In this menu, select the “Virus & threat protection” option and scroll down to click on “Manage ransomware protection”.
  • Here, select the “Allow an app through Controlled folder access” option and click on “Yes”.
  • Next, click on the “Add an allowed app” option and then select “Browser apps”.
  • Here, head over to the game installation folder of Foundation. If the game is installed on the C drive, open C drive > Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common. Here, you will find the Foundation folder. If the game is installed on a different drive, open that drive and navigate to the game’s installation directory.
  • Inside it, find the game’s .exe file and click on Open.
  • Click on “Add” to add the game’s .exe as an allowed app.
  • Once done, you can try launching the game and then checking whether the same error occurs.

Run the game as administrator

Maybe this error is occurring due to permission-related issues. To check this, you can try running the game with admin privileges. How? Simply head over to the game’s installation directory by accessing Steam and then opening Library. Now, right-click on Foundation and select the Manage option. Here, select the Browse Local Files option. Inside the game’s installation directory, find the game’s .exe file and right-click on it. Now, select the Run As Administrator option.

Update GPU Drivers

While this workaround may seem unrelated, it is always better to run games on an updated GPU. So, head over to the official Nvidia or AMD website to download the latest drivers and then install them. After this, launch the game to check whether the issue persists.

Update Game

If you didn’t already know, the developers have released multiple patch fixes to get rid of the most common issues in the game. While it seems that the Fatal Error has not been on their radar yet, it is possible that a future update fixes it for good. So, always download the latest update whenever available.

Reinstall

Well, at last, if none of the workarounds have been of any help, then consider trying a full reinstallation of the game. It is possible that there are certain game files that got corrupted, due to which the log files couldn’t be created. So, a full reinstallation should do the trick. While reinstalling, make sure you are doing so on an SSD.

For now, these are the workarounds that we suggest you try to get rid of the fatal error in Foundation. We hope that this guide has been helpful to you. If you find it informative, consider visiting DigiStatement on a regular basis for more such interesting reads on all things gaming.
