Final Fantasy 16 (FFXVI): How to Use Heatwave

Final Fantasy 16 serves as the sixteenth mainline entry into the long-running Final Fantasy series by Japanese video game development studio Square Enix. Helmed by veteran Yoshi-P as the game’s producer, Final Fantasy 16 was set to correct the mistakes of its predecessor, Final Fantasy XV. And if the reviews are anything to go by, then it’s pretty evident that Yoshi-P and the team were successfully able to achieve that feat. The story is somewhat better, and the combat too has seen a massive improvement from previous Final Fantasy titles. But due to the freshness of the game, many players, especially newcomers, have been finding it hard to use some of the abilities in the game. And if you are reading this article, then you must be looking to learn how to use Heatwave in the game.

Abilities are nothing new to the series. And at this point, they are quite ingrained in it. Unlike the old Final Fantasy titles, modern ones use action-based combat instead of turn-based. Now, if you have played old FF games and the newest entry, you will know just how different both the combat systems are. Due to action-based combat’s fast nature, it’s essential to time your abilities correctly. One wrong move, and the next minute you will be seeing the game-over screen. So, how do you use the Heatwave ability in Final Fantasy 16? Well, let’s find out!

Final Fantasy 16 (FFXVI): How to Use Heatwave

If you already didn’t know, Heatwave is one of the abilities of the Eikon Phoenix. But what’s an Eikon? Well, it’s this game’s version of “Summon”. In Final Fantasy XVI, there are two Eikons of Fire, with one of them being Ifrit and the other being Phoenix, of course. Heatwave is Phoenix’s ability, along with Phoenix Shift, Flames of Rebirth, Rising Flames, and Scarlet Cyclone.

Heatwave, when activated, summons a projectile-dispelling wall of liquid flame, which will then launch several shockwaves. It’s a great ability for hitting distant enemies while also serving as an excellent counter to magic or projectiles. So, how do you use it? Well, the hint is in the game’s description of the ability itself:

“Summon a projectile-dispelling wall of liquid flame before launching several deadly shockwaves. Wave force is amplified upon dispelling magic”.

Heatwave, being a great offensive ability, is more suited toward being a defensive one. You should activate it only when the enemy attacks you using magic. Use it as a counter to those kinds of attacks. This way, you will have killed two birds with one stone: save yourself and deal damage to the enemy.

Heatwave costs only 120 Ability Points, so it’s pretty easy to unlock. Just save enough AP, acquire the Phoenix power (Sunrise, Sunset quest), open the Phoenix ability tree, unlock it, and then make sure to equip it (in the Gear and Eikons tab). You can only equip two abilities per Eikon (minus the default one), so choose your abilities smartly. You can also upgrade the effects of Heatwave with more Ability points.
