Final Fantasy 16 (FFXVI): How to beat Dread Comet Chocobo

For long-time Final Fantasy series fans, Final Fantasy 16 has been the most anticipated release. After the not-so-good reception of Final Fantasy XV, it was critical for Square Enix to release a good mainline modern Final Fantasy game. FFXVI saw its official launch just recently, on June 22, 2023, after being in development for more than half a decade. Right now, the game is a timed exclusive for the PlayStation 5, with a PC port set to release after the expiration of the timed-exclusive contract. Reception for FFXVI has been very positive, with critics praising the game for its fluid and reflex-driven action combat and gorgeous visuals. As with any other game, there are lots of things in Final Fantasy 16 that both newcomers and veterans of the series are finding tough to do. Beating the Dread Comet Chocobo is one of the major discussions in some Final Fantasy 16 circles.

Mini-bosses are a great addition to action-oriented games. In a way, they help test various combat strategies and stay updated with their builds, while also allowing more variety in combat and exploration. This enemy, in particular, is pretty notorious and can be deadly if not dealt with carefully. So, here’s a guide to help you defeat the Dread Comet Chocobo in FFXVI.

Final Fantasy 16 (FFXVI): How to beat Dread Comet Chocobo

It’s always a great idea to know as much as possible about the enemy before initiating a battle. So, here are some important details about it:

Since the Dread Comet is a Chocobo, it doesn’t have a stagger gauge. And that means you will not be able to stagger it, unlike some other enemies in the game. Furthermore, the Dread Comet Chocobo has a limited number of moves to perform. Four to be exact: Flying Kick, Peck, Choco Burst, and Choco Meteor. Now, its moves may be limited, but they pack a punch and have the ability to send you over to the “game over” screen if you are not careful enough. Out of the four attacks, the Choco Meteor is the one you need to watch out for the most. The boss will later upgrade this move to Choco Meteorain and start attacking more relentlessly.

How to defeat it?

Now that you have some general idea about its moves, let’s go over the optimal strategy to defeat it. Since it can’t be staggered, we recommend that you unequip attacks that deal stagger damage and instead equip the ones that do regular damage. Moreover, when it comes to dealing with Meteorain, go the defensive route. Resist your urge to continue attacking and instead focus entirely on dodging and defense. Time your moves according to the Meteorain attack, and you will be able to defeat it easily. We also recommend that you take a good amount of potions for this fight.

Once this enemy is defeated, you will get 5,300 Exp, 90 AP (Ability Points), 13,000 Gil, 30 Renown, and 1 Comet Feather. With that said, we certainly hope that this guide has helped you win the Dread Comet Chocobo fight in Final Fantasy 16. For more guides on FFXVI, keep checking out DigiStatement.
