The newly introduced fishing mechanics in Fallout 76 have made it possible for players who are just wandering nowhere to be indulged in a task that can give them rewards. From eating fish to making various dishes and completing challenges for rewards, the fishing mechanic in itself is a good time killer. But not all players have been fortunate enough to be able to do so in-game. We have come to know that many are encountering an issue where they are unable to fish or start the fishing mini-game in Fallout 76 despite standing near a body of water. The prompt sometimes appears, sometimes not, while many have shared that when it appears, it stays grayed out. That said, if you too are encountering a similar issue, this is just the guide you need.
If you are unable to cast your line in a water body in Fallout 76, don’t worry, you aren’t the only player facing this issue. Many are. It can be due to a variety of reasons. A temporary, or maybe it’s you who is missing a key piece of the puzzle. Anyway, regardless of what’s causing this issue, here are a few workarounds that you can try to fix it.

You’re doing it wrong
To fish in Fallout 76, you will have to find a body of water that’s deep enough. Shallow water bodies will also work, but some of them won’t give you the prompt to start fishing there. That said, if you are unable to fish or the prompt just doesn’t appear, then simply fish a different water body and try again. Also, make sure to place your character in a decent spot near the water. Character placement is also necessary. Then comes pointing your cursor towards the water. Point it accurately and the prompt should work.
Have bait
Without bait, obviously you won’t be able to fish. So, make sure that you have an ample amount of bait in your inventory. Some common and improved bait should do the trick.
Fast Travel
Maybe it’s a temporary issue restricting the fishing mechanic from working properly. So, consider fast traveling to a different area and then come back again to check if the issue persists.
Change server
Another workaround worth trying is to just change the in-game servers and then check if you are able to fish.
Modify rod
It’s also possible that the rod you are using needs modification, which is why the fishing prompt isn’t working. So, go to the Tinker’s bench and select the Modify/Repair option. Select your fishing rod, and then add a mod. Save the changes and then try fishing again.
Spam R
A player shared that spamming the R button while pointing their cursor towards the water body eventually led to bypassing the error. They were able to fish after spamming the R key. You can try doing the same. While you’re at it, keep on holding the R button for a while to check whether the fishing prompt works.
Unable to catch fish?
If your line snaps the moment you try to reel in a fish, then it’s because you will have to wait until the fish pulls the line aggressively. Only after this will you be able to reel in the fish.
