Desperados is one of the most prominent real-time action strategy game franchises out there and a large factor in this popularity is the fact that it is set in the Midwest of the United States in the 1880s, and sees players take control of the cowboy and outlaw John Cooper. The game was originally developed by Spellbound Entertainment until THQ Nordic (formerly Nordic Games) acquired the rights to the franchise in 2013. In this article, we will be taking a look at the possibility of a fifth iteration in the franchise, presumably titled Desperados 4, being developed at THQ Nordic and when its potential release window could be. Right, let’s get into it.
The original Desperados game was named Desperados: Dead or Alive and was released in 2001 for the PC, with an adaptation for the macOS and Linux being released in 2019. The game set a precedent for the rest of the franchise, and several elements from this game were carried over to every game subsequent.
Even though the potential sequel we are talking about is Desperados 4, it will be the fifth mainline instalment in the series. This is due to the fact that after the release of Desperados 2: Cooper’s Revenge in 2006, Helldorado was released the next year, a spin-off title that dealt with the events of the ending of Cooper’s Revenge. The game received average to mediocre views and led to Spellbound reverting to looking at fan feedback to develop a better product, eventually giving up the rights to the franchise. It was only thirteen years later, in 2020, that the next game in the Desperados franchise, titled Desperados 3 was released for Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, macOS and Linux.
Considering the previous release pattern of the franchise before Helldorado was released and it set back the momentum of the series, we could expect to see Desperados 4 around 2025.
