Valve finally released its long-awaited sequel to Counter-Strike on September 27, 2023. Simply titled Counter-Strike 2, the game is now available for both Windows and Linux platforms and is the most-played game on Steam. Just last month alone in October, the game had an average player count of about 792,125 players with peak player numbers reaching 1.3 Million+. This is despite the general bad state CS2 is in right now due to the myriad of bugs and errors. One of them happens to be the Mic not working in lobby issue and this guide will help you deal with it.

Well, as the name suggests, for some reason, players are able to use their mics in different applications like Discord without any kind of problem. However, whenever they enter the in-game lobby of CS2, the mic just stops working. Now we don’t know what’s really causing this to happen so frequently, but it’s happening enough to warrant an immediate fix. So, continue reading to find out whether there’s one available.

Since there isn’t an official fix yet, you will have to make do with the following workarounds. Try these and see if any of them are of help.

Restart –

Before trying other workarounds, we recommend you do a quick restart of the game and the PC. Do that, and if the issue persists, you can try the next workaround.

Ensure that you have the correct mic as the default device –

Players are suggested to check their default device. Make sure your mic is set as the default device. To do that, click on the Speaker icon on your taskbar and select Sound. In the new window, switch to the Recording tab, right-click on your mic, and select Set as Default Device. Now click on Apply and OK. After this, launch the game, join a party, and then check whether the mic works in a lobby.

Check mic “level” –

You should also make sure that your mic “level” isn’t all the way down to 0. To do that, you need to:

  • Type in Control Panel in the Windows search bar.
  • Once you have opened the Control Panel, click on Hardware and Sound > Sound.
  • In the new window, switch to the Recording tab and right-click on your mic to select Properties.
  • Another new window will open. Switch to the Levels tab and check the mic level under Microphone. If it’s set to 0, take it all the way to 100.
  • End the process by clicking on Apply and OK.

Install Media Pack –

Installing a media pack might help with this issue, so give it a try. Just open Windows PowerShell as administrator and then type in the following command: “DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Media.MediaFeaturePack~~~~0.0.1.0”. Once the download and installation are complete, restart your PC and then launch the game.

Change hardware –

If you are using a headset with a mic as your preferred choice for communicating, we recommend you switch to another headset if you have one lying around. This way, you will be able to tell if the issue is with the hardware or the game itself.

Well, these are the workarounds you can try to fix the mic not working in lobby issue in CS2. Additionally, if you want to know how to change or alter the HUD in the game, check out this guide.
