Chained Together Steam Deck controller not working

As far as 3D-platformer games go, Chained Together has surely made its mark among gamers. Developed and published by Anegar Games, this title literally “chains” players together as they try to run from hell. Naturally, the appeal of the game has made it immensely popular among players on multiple platforms. This includes Steam Deck users too. Users of the Steam Deck, the widely renowned handheld from Valve, have been enjoying Chained Together for a while. However, there’s a catch. For some players, the Steam Deck controller isn’t working when they’re trying to play this game. This is as frustrating as it gets and players are actively looking for fixes. Well, if you too are encountering the same issue and are looking for workarounds to fix it, here’s everything you need to know.

The issue with the Steam Deck controller not working in a game isn’t a new one. Multiple games encounter this issue on the Deck, and Chained Together is no different. Anytime this problem occurs, it really hampers the playing experience. So, what can you do if your Steam Deck controller isn’t working in Chained Together? Are there any workarounds to fix this problem? Let’s find out!

Chained Together Steam Deck Controller Not Working: How to Fix?

Chained Together Steam Deck controller not working

Before you try a game on the Deck, it is important to know if it is verified or Playable on it. Next, you should look for controller support to make sure that the game supports controllers. Anyway, coming back to Chained Together, you will find that the game is neither listed as Playable nor Verified for the Steam Deck, but it offers partial controller support. So, it’s natural that some issues will occur when you try to run it on this handheld. However, there are a few workarounds you can try:

Restart the Game, Restart the Steam Deck

The first workaround that you can try is a simple one. Simply close the game and then relaunch it after a while. If this doesn’t work, you can try restarting the Steam Deck. Simply press and hold the Power button for a few seconds to force restart the device. If the device doesn’t start by itself, you’ll need to press and hold the Power button again. Once your Steam Deck is back on, launch the game, and see if the issue persists.

Reorder Controllers

If you used any external controller with your Deck previously, it’ll be registered as Controller 1. This makes the game fail to read the default controller. You can change this in the Controller Settings for Steam Deck. You can find this settings option by pressing the Steam button on Deck and going to Settings. Inside the Controller Settings, set your Steam Deck controller as Controller 1, and that’s it. Then, launch the game and see if the controller works.

Enable 360 Controller

  • Once again, go to the Controller Settings of the Steam Deck by following the steps mentioned in the previous workaround.
  • Next, go to Recommended Layout.
  • Press and hold the Steam button, use the right touchpad as the mouse, and use the R2 button to click. Go to Settings by following these instructions.
  • Open Controls and go to 360 Controller.
  • Enable this option and then run the game.

Use Proton GE or Proton Experimental

  • Go to your Steam Library, highlight Chained Together, and press the three-dots button.
  • Open Properties and go to the Compatibility tab.
  • Select the “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” option.
  • Select Proton GE as the compatibility layer.
  • Run the game and check if the controller works.
  • If it didn’t, then follow the same steps again. Except this time, select Proton Experimental as the compatibility layer instead of Proton GE.

Connect and Disconnect an External Controller

You can try connecting and disconnecting an external controller to your Deck and see if that works. You can, in fact, use the external controller itself to play the game.

Try Community Layouts

You can check if there are any community layouts available for Chained Together. For this, go to the Properties menu of the game via Steam, and select the Controller tab. Then, switch to Community Layouts. Here, check if there are any layouts available. If yes, select one and then check if the controller works in-game.

Well, these are the workarounds worth trying if you’re facing the issue with the Steam Deck controller not working in Chained Together. Hopefully, this guide was able to help you fix the issue for good. If you found it insightful, keep visiting DigiStatement for more such gaming content and information!
