Buckshot Roulette crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it

Buckshot Roulette is the newest indie hit out there right now. Developed by Mike Klubnika, a solo developer, this indie tabletop horror title was first released on itch.io and then later on Steam on April 4, 2024. As of April 17, 2024, Buckshot Roulette has reached 1 million copies in sales. An incredible number for an indie title like it. Now, while most of the player base is on PC, there exists a subset of this player base who happen to enjoy Buckshot Roulette on their Steam Decks. And unfortunately, some have complained about experiencing crashing issues on it.

Although Buckshot Roulette isn’t officially supported for the Deck, it does seem to run just fine on it. And that’s been possible because of its native Linux version. Now, this crashing issue on Steam Deck is present in other games too. In the case of Buckshot Roulette, anything ranging from missing game files to the game version being outdated can be the cause. Regardless of what the cause is, this issue needs to be fixed. So, let’s go ahead and find out how.

Players can use the following workarounds to deal with this issue. Try these one by one and see which ones are of help.

Update –

The very first thing that we recommend you do is update. Make sure to check if there’s an update for both Buckshot Roulette and the Steam Deck. If there’s one, download and install that update. Next, launch the game and see if the issue continues. If it does, switch to another workaround.

Force Proton –

If the game keeps crashing when run on the Deck natively, we suggest that you try forcing Proton and see if that helps. In order to use Proton, you will need to select Buckshot Roulette from your Library and then press the Options button on your Deck. Next, head to Properties and switch to the Compatibility section. Checkmark the Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool option. Now, you can choose a Proton version from the drop-down menu. You can start with Proton Experimental and move on to other ones if that doesn’t work.

Repair your game files –

Players can also try verifying and repairing the game’s file to deal with this issue. For that, you can follow the previous method’s steps until you are in the game’s Properties menu. Following that, select Installed Files and then Verify integrity of game files. Now wait for the process to finish. Once that’s done, restart Buckshot Roulette and launch it.

Install Buckshot Roulette on the Deck’s internal memory –

If you happen to have Buckshot Roulette installed on a memory card, uninstall it from there and reinstall it on the Deck’s internal memory. In case the issue persists, you can take a look at other workarounds.

Switch to Desktop Mode –

For players who are having issues enjoying Buckshot Roulette on Game Mode, we suggest that you switch to Desktop Mode and play the game there. This is a pretty common way to bypass this issue, so try it and find out if it helps.

Reinstall the game –

If you are still experiencing this crashing issue, then we recommend that you reinstall the game. At times, the reinstall method can be of great help, so give it a try. Hopefully, you won’t have to face this issue once again after reinstalling Buckshot Roulette on your Deck.
