GTA Online was released on the 1st of October 2013, almost a month following the GTA 5 release on 17h of September 2013
It allowed players who had purchased GTA 5 to play alongside other players in the large-scale map of GTA 5.
Common problem players face with GTA Online on Xbox is not being able to connect to servers or constantly getting disconnected.
GTA Online not working on Xbox
If you are facing any form of issues regarding connectivity in GTA Online on Xbox, then follow the steps we have mentioned below to fix or troubleshoot the issue.
Before we get into troubleshooting the issues, check whether the GTA Online servers are up for Xbox, you can check this by visiting this site
If the servers are online then follow the next steps to troubleshoot the issue.
1) – Clear your Xbox cache
- Temporary files on your Xbox are present to help with performance however can hinder it at times by getting corrupted
- Press and hold down the Xbox power button till the Xbox completely shuts down
- Once the indicator lights are off, disconnect the power brick from the back of your console
- Wait at least 30 seconds before you connect it again
- plug the power brick back and switch on your Xbox
- This will also reset your brightness and language choice.
2) – Clear your Xbox alternate MAC address.
- Press the Xbox button
- Move to the System tab on the right
- Select “Settings”
- then select “Network Settings”
- further select “Advanced settings”
- select “Alternate Mac Address”
- Once here then select the “Clear” button to clear the alternate MAC address on your Xbox.
3) Check your internet speed, by taking the speed test here, GTA Online requires minimum download and upload speed mentioned below
- Download Speed – 7.5 Mbps
- Upload Speed – 1 Mbps (recommended):
- Upload Speed – 0.5 Mbps (Minimum)
4) – check your Network Address Translation type settings
- Navigate to the “System Panel”
- Select “Settings”
- Once in settings, scroll down to Network and then select “Network Settings”
- This should display your Nat type, an open NAT means fewer connectivity issues and conflicts with connection
OPEN NAT Type – Can play games with any NAT type
MODERATE NAT Type – Can play games with open or moderate NAT types
STRICT NAT Type – Can only play games with open NAT types
- If it shows NAT type unknown then select “Test NAT type”
- To change your NAT type, you will need to configure your router or firewall if you have one.
5) – Change your Domain Name Servers
- Press the Xbox button on your controller
- Navigate to the Systems tab
- Select “Settings” and then select “Network”
- Select “Network Settings” in Network
- Select “Advanced Settings”
- Ensure that you write down your current DNS server from this screen
- Select “DNS settings”
- Select “Manual”
- Enter the following DNS servers
- Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8
- Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4
6) Check your Open Ports
- Xbox requires the following ports to be open
- Port 88 (UDP)
- Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
- Port 3544 (UDP)
- Port 80 (TCP)
- Port 500 (UDP)
- Port 4500 (UDP)
- GTA Online requires the following ports to be open
- Port 6672 (UDP)
- Port 61455 (UDP)
- Port 61457 (UDP)
- Port 61456 (UDP)
- Port 61458 (UDP)
Other than the various methods mentioned above, try restarting your router by unplugging it for 10 minutes and calling your ISP regarding any issues on their side if the issue is still not resolved
