PS3 servers shutting down in 2021 : Is it happening ?

PS3 or PlayStation 3 is one of the very well known video gaming console that has been developed by Sony Computer Entertainment and is a successor of PlayStation 2. It has competed mainly against Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii as a part of seventh generation of video game consoles.

It was officially announced in E3 2005 and was released towards the end of 2006. It was also one of the first consoles to use Blu-ray Disc as the main storage medium. It also integrated social gaming services which includes the PlayStation Network and also the first that can be controlled from a handheld console through the remote connectivity with PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita. A slim model was released in the year 2009 and was more light and thin in comparison to the original version and had a redesigned logo and marketing design and a small start-up change in software.

It was negatively reviewed in the beginning because of its expensive price which was $599 for the 60GB model and $499 for the 20GB model. It was also criticized for the complex processor architecture and lack of quality games. It started slow at the market but was eventually started to be well-received by everyone. It recovered a lot after the introduction of the slim model introduced in 2009.

Now recently, a news has been doing rounds over the internet saying that the PS3 servers would be shut down very soon. Now people have been asking that whether this is actually happening. Well, there is no official confirmation about this news but if we are talking about the online connectivity features of PS3 games, this is definitely possible. PS3 has various games like Destiny 1, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption that are played by a lot of people. Till now, Sony has kept the game servers afloat for these. Shutting down of servers might in fact be just what Sony wants to push the PS3 players to purchase PS4 or PS5 and both would continue to get the required support for online play.

A formal announcement will be definitely made when they would shut down the servers. For now, no more PS3 games are under development. On the other hand, Sony might not shut down PS3 servers because people are still purchasing PS3 games and so as long as the sales revenue is good, everything will be continued. So, for now, it cannot be said with a confirmation that PS3 servers are actually shutting down. All we need to do right now is wait for an official confirmation from Sony.
