In the old days, League of Legends events was straightforward. If they took place by region, during LAN competition for example, or if it was a question of changing the map of the Summoner’s Rift to give it a more wintery feel, it is clear that Riot Games has been creative for its latest events.
The Coming of the Howling Abyss
In the early days of League of Legends, the ARAM map was located within the training tool and could be accessed through custom game creation. It was finally in 2012 that Riot Games decided to make it official and integrate it on the client.
For this, Riot Games conceptualized the Howling Abyss, an area of Frejlord where at the time, we were treated to the overhaul of Sejuani and the arrival of Lissandra on the Summoner’s Rift. At that time, players had a choice of three factions led by Lissandra, Sejuani, and Ashe. In-game, this resulted in the coming of the Howling Abyss map, and a little easter-egg that still exists: when you face-off, for example, as Ashe, Lissandra, or Sejuani in Team D ‘opposite, and you manage to assist/kill the champion in question, you get a crown for the battle of Frejlord.’
Bilgewater, the role-play event
On the same note, in 2015 we had an event around Bilgewater. At the time, that helped introduce Tahm Kench and the Gangplank redesign. The event took place in several stages: a new ARAM map set in Bilgewater, but also a more special one on Summoner’s Rift. You could spend Silver Serpents on the latter, the currency of Bilgewater on which Gangplank depends on its A / Q-spell, to obtain in-game benefits, such as monsters for example.
Around this event, we were treated to news revolving around Twisted Fate, Graves, Miss Fortune, and finally Gangplank. When the news where Miss Fortune sunk her boat, role-play, Riot Games had chosen to deactivate Gangplank from the game … To better celebrate its return, with a revamp of its base skin. At the time, players who already had the champion were entitled to another skin, Captain Gangplank, this is his version before the fateful clash with Miss Fortune.
Invasion Star Guardian Mode
Then, how not to talk about the events related to the Star Guardians? Originally, Star Guardian Lux is a requested skin by players and hinted at the Sailor Moon anime. Later there arrived a set of Star Guardian skins for Jinx, Lulu, Poppy, Janna, who officially joined Lux’s group. In 2017, new Star Guardian champions were born with Ahri who is the leader of the group composed of Syndra, Soraka, Miss Fortune, and finally Ezreal. Their arrival was complemented by an exclusive game mode, news from the Star Guardian universe, and even a quick quiz to find out which Star Guardian you were.
As for the event, it was a PvE mode where we played a Star Guardian. Surrounded by a halo, players had to move forward on the map, pushing back the Void creatures. This mode was in itself quite difficult, to the point that Riot Games had to nerf it. Something similar was once again enjoyed by players with the 2018 Odyssey mode.
Either way, Riot Games has sprinkled the game with events, like 2014’s Ascension mode on the map, Crystal Breach with Azir coming to Summoner’s Rift, or URF mode, the One for All, other events like Blood Moon taking place on the Summoner’s Rift, or the special PvP cards for the Dark Star skins of 2017 (where we played Thresh each time) or even Project Hunter in 2017.

Since the Prestige Edition skins first appeared, Riot Games has revised the vents. Most of the time, if they remain tied to a handful of skins occurring in-game, it is enough to complete quests given automatically by the game to get a specific currency. This currency allows you to buy exclusive content at the event … this was the case for the Dark Star event of 2019, or more recently Queen of Combat … nothing original in itself, and we could criticize the repetitive nature of these missions …
A burst of creativity
Recently, Riot Games gave us probably their most original and creative event of recent years: Spirit Blossom. Indeed, the event not only introduced Lilia but also signalled the return of Yone, Yasuo’s missing brother. If Yone was known in Yasuo’s biography, and as a Legend of Runeterra card, players were expecting him to come along with Senna. If there were more classic missions, the Spirit Blossom event had the merit of offering another angle of approach: it was first of all a painting, presented like a dating game.
To complete the event, you had to talk to the characters who were linked to it (the Spirit Blossom skins in short), in order to strengthen the links between them and the player. In order to access a new link, you had to complete in-game missions (do X kills for example, etc.), and chat with the character. When we got to the letter S, we got an icon for that champion. Later, a particular flower was given, and we could give it to our favorite champion to earn an in-game emote. In addition, Riot Games had been creative in teasing the various Spiritual Flower champions through social networks, in Granting them a little catchphrase that we found in the game.
In addition, Riot Games had the tease of doing a poll on Twitter, to find out which champion players preferred! The winner was none other than Kindred.
Finally, the Spirit Blossom event was followed by two big videos, the first presenting the return of Yone, while the second delivered the tragic story with Yasuo … and announced in preview The Ruined King. At the end of this video, we saw Yasuo boarding with Ahri on a boat for Bilgewater, and it is in a video presentation of The Ruined King that we find them accompanied by Illaoi, Pyke, Braum and Miss Fortune.
