League of Legends: Wild Rift’s Open Beta has only launched in Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. That hasn’t stopped gamers around the world from using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to play the MOBA game.

Riot said that due to gamers around the world accessing servers in beta regions through VPNs, a lot of issues are being created. This includes drawbacks like language barriers and even “unplayable lag spikes” for everyone.
Riot added that it had “explored ways to protect the gaming experience” and decided that the best way was to prevent VPN access from “larger VPN services outside of beta regions”. This change is effective immediately. Other VPN services could also be suspended in the future.
“It is killing us to turn off access to anyone, but we think it’s the right move for beta players to enjoy. Wild Rift the way it was meant to be played,” Riot said.
This change will not affect players who are already in open beta regions and use a VPN to play the game.
League of Legends: Wild Rift will expand to Europe and other parts of Asia in early December. It will be released in North America, South America and India in the spring of 2021.
