Right on June 3, 2020 yesterday, a game developer named Rare officially presented their game titled Sea Of Thieves to Steam. The Sea Of Thieves game was previously only available exclusively for the Microsoft Store. Now the game is now present and you can download it on the Steam platform.

For those of you who have never played  Sea of Thieves, this game allows you to act as a pirate who sails the ocean in a fantasy world. You can become a solo pirate or form a crew of up to four people. Sea of Thieves also comes with a first-person perspective. It also features a cross-play feature between Xbox One and Windows.

It also quickly became the top-selling game on steam but there was a problem to run it on Linux based systems which were quickly fixed due to the community.

Sea of Thieves Linux Fix

You may have seen my post a few days ago about getting Sea of Thieves working as it has just released on Steam. Now thanks to the awesome community surrounding us all, we have a fix!

  • Use Proton 5.08

  • Use Protontricks to switch to Windows 7

  • Drop this DLL into your steam/steamapps/common/Proton 5.0/dist/lib64/wine folder (backing up the old one that is in there)

If you are unsure of your Steam location, right-click Proton 5.0 in your library and click Manage > Browse Local Files. Then navigate dist > lib64 > wine and drop the DLL here.

If you are having trouble following the 2nd step follow this:

In a terminal write the following:

  • protontricks 1172620 --gui

1172620 is just the ID of Sea of Thieves. Ignore any warnings that may pop up.

  • Then select Select the default wineprefix and click OK.

  • Next, select the Run winecfg option and click OK.

  • It will now open an old school windows style interface. Where you can select the Windows Version and click Apply/Okay.

There are still some issues to be fixed as the DLC is not editable code. If you don’t hear audio, it is an issue currently being worked on by the community and seeing their proactivity, it will soon be fixed.
