The Alters LowLevelFatalError: How to fix it

With the recent release of The Alters on June 13, 2025, it is gaining lots of positive reviews on Steam. But unlike any other Unreal Engine game, this game also comes with the infamous LowLevelFatalError, which will crash your game every time you try to launch it. Although there is yet to be any official patch for this issue, here are tested workarounds that have fixed this issue in other Unreal Engine games and have been found to provide solutions for The Alters as well. So, without further ado, let’s get right into the details.

Restart the game and PC

A simple yet effective fix. Sometimes, the game may run into temporary glitches or background processes that cause issues like LowLevelFatalError. Fully exit The Alters, close any unnecessary apps running in the background, and restart your PC. After rebooting, launch the game again.

Modify Game Launch Options

  • Open Steam: Go to your Steam Library.
  • Access Game Properties: Right-click on The Alters game in your library and select “Properties.”
  • Enter Launch Options: In the “General” tab, you will find a field labeled “LAUNCH OPTIONS.”
  • Try -dx11: Type -dx11 into this box and close the properties tab.
  • Launch and Check: Now, launch the game and check if it solves your issue.
  • If Not, Try Others: If “-dx11” doesn’t work, remove it and try -dx12 or –windowed one by one.

Note: If none of these commands work, make sure to remove the command from the launch options before trying other fixes.

Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling

A Steam user mentioned that after facing frequent crashes, enabling Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling helped them play the game crash-free for at least an hour, so it’s worth a try even if it’s not permanent. To enable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling—

  • Open Windows Settings: Press the Windows key + I on your keyboard simultaneously.
  • Navigate to Display Settings: In the left-hand menu, click on System, then select Display from the options on the right.
  • Access Graphics Settings: Scroll down on the right-hand side of the Display window and click on Graphics.
  • Advanced Graphics Settings: Within the Graphics settings, click on Advanced Graphics Settings.
  • Turn on “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling”: You will find a toggle switch labeled “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.” Just click on it to turn it on.

Verify Game Files

Another common fix that might work for you is verifying the game files via Steam. To do this, open Steam, go to your Library, right-click on The Alters, then select Properties > Installed Files > Verify the integrity of game files. Now check if the problem persists.

Update or Rollback Graphics Drivers

Ensure your GPU drivers are completely up to date, or in some cases, roll back to a more stable version. Visit NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel’s official website directly and download the latest drivers for your GPU. If the latest drivers didn’t help, then you can consider rolling back your NVIDIA drivers. For a Steam user, rolling back to Nvidia driver version 576.02 not only fixed the fatal error in The Alters but also in other games. So, do give it a try.

Update System Software

Finally, make sure that your Windows operating system is fully up to date. To check this, go to Settings -> Windows Update -> Check for updates. If there are pending updates, download and install them and then launch the game to check if the issue persists.

That said, these are the tested workarounds you should try to get past the LowLevelFatalError in The Alters. We hope you found this guide helpful. Be sure to visit DigiStatement daily for more guides on everything gaming-related.
