If you have gotten your hands on the recently released Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC, then you must have felt the sheer attention to detail the game features. From being officially released on the PS5 back in 2024, it has finally made its way to the PC platform. But unlike the PS5 version of the game, there are some pesky bugs in the PC version that many players are having to deal with. If you are reading this guide, well, then it is clear that you too have encountered the autosave not working issue in the game. Well, in this guide, we have shared everything you need to know about this issue and some workarounds to help you fix it for good. So, continue reading until the end.

Losing progress is a gamer’s nightmare. Unfortunately, most players in LoF II Remastered are going through this nightmare, as reports confirm that hours of gameplay are being lost due to this bug. What happens is that the game tries to autosave at a certain point only to get stuck on the following message: “autosaving still in progress, please wait…”. When this happens, the manual save option also becomes useless and you are left at the mercy of the game. In the majority of the cases, closing the game and starting over is the only solution. But doing so will result in losing progress. But there is a way to minimize the damage using the backup save that the game creates.

An official solution for this bug hasn’t been released yet, so you are left with trying workarounds that might do the trick. Also, if the issue has already occurred and you’re searching for a solution to get it fixed, unfortunately, that’s not possible. You will have to close the game manually using the Task Manager first. This will result in progress being lost. After this, here are a few things you can try:

Verify Game Files

For starters, try verifying the game files via Steam to check whether the issue persists. To do this, go to Steam Library and then right-click on the game. Select Properties and then in the Installed Files tab, select the Verify Integrity of Game Files option. After the scan is complete, launch the game to check whether the most recent saves exist. If not, try the next workaround.

Try manual saving

Although many players have reported that manual saving gets disabled when encountering this bug, you can still try it to check whether you can actually manually save your progress before force quitting. If you can, then at least your progress will be saved.

Use backup save files

If you are lucky, the backup saves that the game creates at regular intervals will help you get some of your progress back. But to use the save, you will need to access the game’s save file location. So, head over to this directory: C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\The Last of Us Part II\ and then open the folder with a combination of numbers and letters. Inside this folder, you should find a bunch of backup files with the “.0A_bak0“, “.0A_bak1” extensions. Each backup file is accompanied by a number and that goes up to 10. The backup file with the lowest number is the most recent save. So, once you have figured out the latest backup save file, copy it and then paste the same in the SAVEFILE0A folder. Once pasted, rename the file in such a way that only the “.0A_bak0” part is removed. If the backup save file’s name is USR-DATA.0A_bak1, then it should become USR-DATA after renaming. This will override the existing save that is causing the issue. Once done, launch the game to check how much progress you’ve actually lost.

Run Steam in Offline Mode

After you’ve encountered this issue, do you know how to make sure to not run into it again? Well, that is by simply running Steam in offline mode. For this, go to Steam, select the Steam option, and then click on Go Offline. In offline mode, launch LoF II Remastered and then continue progressing the story. You will notice that the autosave feature will work perfectly fine. Some have speculated that this issue is related to Steam Cloud Saves, which is why going offline fixes the issue. You can continue manual saving the game in offline mode as well. And, when you start in online mode again, the offline saves will get synced with Steam Cloud Saves, resulting in a smooth transition.

OneDrive

Another thing that can restrict the game’s ability to save your progress is none other than OneDrive. What you need to do is disable its sync feature and then check whether the autosave works. How? Simply access your taskbar, right-click on the OneDrive icon, and select the gear icon. Here, click on the Pause Syncing option. Once done, you can launch the game and then check whether the autosave issue occurs again.

Continue manual saving at regular intervals

Since this issue can occur at any point in your in-game journey, we recommend that you practice manually saving your progress regularly. Doing so will safeguard your progress in case the autosave messes with the most recent save. You can use your latest manual save to get back into the action after quitting the game due to the bug, so it is worth saving every 10 minutes.

Check Drive Space

It is also possible that the storage drive in which the game stores your progress is already full, restricting the entry of new data. So, ensure that the default drive (C) is not near its full capacity, or else such issues can occur.

For now, these are the workarounds we recommend that you try to fix the autosave feature not working in Last of Us Part II Remastered. If you find this guide informative, consider visiting DigiStatement daily for more such interesting reads on all things gaming.
