Sunset Overdrive Steam Deck controller not working

Multiple players have reported the problem with the Steam Deck controller not working in a bunch of games. Sunset Overdrive is the latest addition to this list. We really understand the concern. Valve’s Steam Deck is a popular handheld PC that many players consider to be their favorite. If they continue to face issues with the controller of the Deck, that becomes a headache. Especially with a game as popular as Sunset Overdrive, players want the issue to be resolved as quickly as possible. If you’re facing this issue with the Steam Deck controller not working in Sunset Overdrive, you’re in the right place. In this guide, we’ve shared all the potential workarounds to fix the problem. So, without further ado, let’s begin!

Released in 2018, Sunset Overdrive is a popular parkour title. Now, for Steam Deck, the status of Sunset Overdrive shows “unsupported” on ProtonDB. This is already a concern for the users. On top of this, if the controller doesn’t work for this game on Steam Deck, that’s another headache. So, what can you do about it? Is there any fix for the Steam Deck controller not working issue in Sunset Overdrive? Let’s find out!

Sunset Overdrive Steam Deck Controller Not Working: How to Fix?

Sunset Overdrive Steam Deck controller not working

To begin with, since multiple users have reported this problem, we have shared one effective workaround that was shared by a player. Now, one Reddit user (unfortunately, we found that their account has been deleted) shared that you can fix this problem by enabling PS3 and Xbox controller support via Steam. Apparently, you can do this by switching to Desktop mode, going to Steam Controller Settings, and enabling PS3 or Xbox Controller Support from there. However, if you haven’t figured this out already, Reddit user EmbajadorDeCristo shared that they can’t find this option. If you’re having a hard time following this workaround, then try these generic fixes:

Restart the Game

Restarting the game is a quick and simple workaround that often fixes whatever issue you are facing. So, simply close Sunset Overdrive on your Deck, wait a while, and run it again. See if the issue persists.

Reorder Your Controllers

If you used an external controller previously, the Deck would’ve registered it as controller 1. This means even for Sunset Overdrive, Deck won’t read the default controller. To change this, open the Controller Settings on your Deck. You’ll find this option once you press the Steam button on your Deck and go to Settings. Here, set the Steam Deck controller as controller 1. Then, run the game and see if it works.

Enable 360 Controller

  • Open Controller Settings as shared in the previous workaround.
  • Go to Recommended Layout.
  • Press and hold the Steam button, use the right touchpad as the mouse, and use R2 to click. Using this method, go to Settings.
  • Open Controls and locate the 360 Controller option.
  • Enable 360 Controller, then go back and run the game. See if the issue persists.

Use Proton GE or Proton Experimental

  • Go to your library and highlight Sunset Overdrive.
  • Press the three-dot button and then go to Properties.
  • Go to Compatibility.
  • Now select “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool” and choose the latest Proton GE version.
  • Go back to the game, run it, and see if you can use the controller.
  • If you still can’t use the controller, then follow the same steps, except this time, select Proton Experimental as the compatibility layer.

Connect and Disconnect an External Controller

You can try connecting an external controller and then disconnecting it quickly to fix the issue. Sometimes, this trick will make your Steam Deck controller start working in a game. If you want, using the external controller is also another possibility that you can explore.

Use a Community Layout

You can find out if there are any available community layouts available for Sunset Overdrive and use that to play the game. For this, open Sunset Overdrive on your Deck and tap on the controller icon. You’ll find this right beside the cog wheel icon. Now, switch to the Community Layouts tab. From here, you need to select the layout that you like the most for the game (if available). Once you’ve selected the layout, you can go back, run the game, and see if it works. If this doesn’t work, you can also try launching the game in Steam’s Big Picture Mode and disabling Steam Input.

Well, this is all that we have on the Steam Deck controller not working issue in Sunset Overdrive. Hopefully, we were able to help you fix the problem through this guide. If you enjoyed reading this piece and want to read more such gaming content and guides, stay tuned to DigiStatement!
