The death of Paragon was a sad one for many. Fortunately, Predecessor by Omeda Studios is here to fill its place. The game just recently entered its free-to-play open beta on March 28, 2024, and so far seems to be doing great. At the time of publishing this guide, the game had a 24-hour peak player count of about 4,601 players. And that’s for the Steam version alone. Considering it’s also available on Epic and consoles, it’s safe to say that things aren’t really that bad for Predecessor. Besides consoles and PCs, the game can also be enjoyed on Valve’s PC handheld – the Steam Deck. Unfortunately, recently there have been reports of the game crashing on the Deck, a lot.
Currently, Predecessor isn’t officially supported for the Steam Deck. However, Valve has marked the game Playable. Now, this crashing issue isn’t something new. A ton of games have faced this similar issue for one reason or another. Nonetheless, this is a major problem and hence needs to be fixed. So, let’s go ahead and find out all the available workarounds for this issue.
Predecessor crashing on Steam Deck: How to fix it
The following workarounds will help you bypass this issue. Try these and see which ones are of help to you.
Restart the Deck –
The very first thing that we recommend you do is restart your Steam Deck. It’s a quick and common way of dealing with this issue, so start with this. If restarting the Deck doesn’t work, you can switch to another workaround.
Use a different Proton version –
We also suggest using a different Proton version and seeing if that helps. For many switching to Proton Experimental allowed them to play the game without many issues, so you can try doing that. However, in case Experimental doesn’t work for you, we recommend trying out newer Proton versions.
Switch to a different Update channel –
Players can also try switching to a different OS update channel in order to deal with this issue. To do this, you will need to press the Steam button on your Deck and then navigate to the System section. In there, you will find the System Update Channel under Beta Participation. Click the drop-down menu next to System Update Channel and select either Beta or Preview.
Launch the game from Steam –
This is specifically for those who are using Heroic Launcher to launch the game. If you are one of them, we highly recommend that you instead get the game from Steam and launch it from there. In case this doesn’t help, you can check out other fixes mentioned here.
Repair game files –
Another common method of resolving this crashing issue is to repair the game’s file. On Steam Deck, that can be done by selecting Predecessor from the Library and then pressing the Options button. Next, select Properties and then switch to the Installed Files tab. Now, click on the Verify integrity of game files option and wait for the process to finish.
Reinstall –
If other workarounds aren’t of help, then this might work for you. Basically, all you have to do is uninstall Predecessor from your Steam Deck and then start a new download. Once the download is complete and the installation is done, launch the game and check if the issue persists.
