With the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo once again proved just how much they could do with underpowered hardware like the Nintendo Switch. However, despite the game running mostly fine on the Switch, many fans of the game want to play it on much more powerful hardware with a much more stable FPS. And that’s where Switch emulators like the Yuzu and Ryujinx emulators come into play. For many, Yuzu has been their go-to emulator for emulating ToTK, but it seems like some are encountering crashing issues with it.
Although both Yuzu and Ryujinx have made an impressive stride in emulating the Nintendo Switch, a lot of games are still unplayable or won’t boot at all. Thankfully, ToTK isn’t one of them. However, this crashing issue is something that isn’t exclusive to ToTK. Anything ranging from an outdated GPU driver to shader cache can be the culprit behind this issue. Nevertheless, you are here for a fix, and this guide will give you that.
Zelda ToTK Yuzu crash issue: How to fix it?
You aren’t going to find any official fix for this issue, so the following workarounds are the ones that you will have to try. So, try them and see if any of them are of help.
Delete shader cache –
For many players, getting rid of the game’s shader cache was what helped them fix this issue. So, we suggest you start with this. To delete ToTK’s shader cache, right-click on it on the emulator, and select Open Transferable Pipeline Cache. Delete everything inside and then launch the game. Additionally, you can also disable using shader cache from the Yuzu settings.
Update –
Now, make sure that the Yuzu emulator version you are using is the latest one. Then see if there’s an update for Windows. If there’s one, then download and install that update. Lastly, ensure that you have downloaded the latest version of ToTK.
Change emulator graphics backend –
Changing the graphics backend is also something that has helped a ton of players deal with crashing issues so try this. If you’ve got a Nvidia GPU, set the API of Yuzu to OpenGL and for those with AMD GPUs, use Vulkan. You can also try switching between the two and see which one works.
Update GPU drivers –
When using emulators, it’s important that you are using the latest and most stable ones out there. So if you haven’t updated your GPU drivers in a while, immediately update it. After you’ve updated the drivers, you can launch the game and see if the crash occurs again. If it does, switch to the next workaround.
Check the minimum requirements –
If this is your first time trying out Yuzu, know that Nintendo Switch emulation demands a somewhat demanding build. Here’s the Quickstart Guide for Yuzu, which mentions everything regarding hardware requirements. If your PC is more than capable of running the emulator, then use the next method. If it’s not, you will have to upgrade your build.
Switch to Windowed or Borderless Windowed mode –
Going from Fullscreen to Windowed or Borderless Windowed Mode might just be the thing you need to fix this issue. So, try these and see if it helps. Additionally, you can also try lowering the resolution, setting Window Adapting Filter to AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution and the Anti-Aliasing Method to FXAA. Also, make sure FSR sharpness is at 50%.
Delete certain files –
Some players were able to fix this issue by right-clicking on the game and selecting Open Save Data Location. After that, you need to navigate to Album and delete anything that doesn’t display images. Once that’s done, restart your PC and then launch the game.
Reinstall –
If nothing else works, we recommend you reinstall the emulator. Once the reinstallation is done, add ToTK and then launch it.
And that’s all the information we have on this topic. Additionally, we suggest you check out this guide for the best Yuzu settings for ToTK. Anyway, for more such content, keep following DigiStatement. Also read: How to play Pikmin 4 on PC via Yuzu Emulator?
