For Hopoo Games, Risk of Rain 2 is the game that changed everything. While the first Risk of Rain was good, it wasn’t a major success like its sequel. Risk of Rain 2 saw its full release in 2020, and since then it’s been one of the best and most frequently recommended indie games out there, especially in the rougelite genre. And one of the things that makes RoR2 so fun is its many great mods. However, it seems like just recently, players have started encountering a major problem with RoR2. More specifically, the RoR2 not launching with mods issue.
As the name suggests, many players are facing issues when starting RoR2 with mods. Why? We can’t really say. It could be due to the mods itself having issues, incompatibility, or the game missing some of its files. So, is there a fix for this issue? Continue reading to find out!
Risk of Rain (RoR) 2 not launching with mods: How to fix it
You can use the following workarounds for now until an official fix becomes available. Try these thoroughly and see if any of them are of help.
Restart –
The first thing that we recommend you do is restart the game. If this doesn’t help, you can try restarting your PC too. Restarting usually fixes such issues, but if you still experience this problem, take a look at other workarounds. Furthermore, you can also try closing every other program and then launching the game.
Update –
Try to update the game and see if that helps. Besides that, you should also make sure your system, mods, and GPU drivers are updated as well. Now, despite doing all that if you are still unable to launch the game with mods, switch to another fix.
Switch DPI scaling from Application to either System or System (Enhanced) –
Some players got their issue fixed by simply switching the application’s DPI scaling to either System or System (Enhanced). And to do that,
- Right-click on the game’s exe file or on the shortcut and select Properties.
- Next, switch to the Compatibility tab and click on the Change high DPI settings option located below.
- In the next window, checkmark Override high DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by: option.
- Now, choose either System or System (Enhanced). End the process by clicking OK.
Verify game files –
Players can also try the standard fix of verifying and repairing the game files. Basically, what this does is thoroughly verify your game files, and if there’s any missing or corrupted file found, it will be repaired accordingly. And the way to do this is by:
Steam
- Open Steam and click on Library.
- Now, right-click on the game and select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
- After the verification process is over, restart your PC and then launch the game.
Epic
- Launch the Epic Games Launcher and select Library from the left panel.
- Click on the three dots on the game’s tile and select Manage > Verify.
- Once the files are verified and repaired, close the launcher, restart the PC, and start the game.
This is also a good way to get the config folder, it it isn’t there by default in the Risk_of_Rain2_Data\Config folder.
Start the game with the “Start modded” option –
For those using Thunderstore mod manager, a simple reason behind this issue could be that you must have accidentally selected the Start vanilla option instead of Start modded. So, what we recommend you do is select the latter option and then check if the issue persists or not. If it does, you can try the next workaround. Additionally, you can also try reinstalling your mods. Also, you can try launching the file by clicking on the exe file located inside the Steam\Common\RiskofRain2 folder.
Create a new profile –
For mod manager users, one of the common ways to fix this issue is to simply create a new profile. That’s all, really. It’s a quick and simple method, so give it a try.
Run the game with admin permissions –
These days, running games with admin permissions is the way to go. And to do that, you need to –
- Right-click on either the game’s exe file or shortcut.
- In the new window, switch to the Compatibility section.
- Now checkmark the Run this program as an administrator option and end the process by clicking on Apply and OK.
Install RoR2 on a different drive –
Players who have RoR2 installed on the C drive can try moving it to another drive, and vice versa. And if you happen to have the game installed on an HDD, we recommend you uninstall it from there and fresh install it on an SSD.
