COD Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) Error Code 0x887a0005: Is there any fix yet

Another year and another COD title. This time it’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the sequel to 2022’s MWII and a remake of the original 2011 game of the same name. Now that Activision-Blizzard is under Xbox, lots of fans expected the COD series to ditch the yearly release schedule, but it seems like that isn’t happening anytime soon. Developed by Sledgehammer Games, MW3 is just a few days away from its full release, but many have already gotten their hands on the game thanks to the pre-order early access. Players are only given access to the MW3 campaign, so it’s not full access. But despite that, many are still enjoying what they have. However, just like any other newly released title, COD: MW3 has some major issues that need to be fixed ASAP. And one of those happens to be the 0x887a0005 error that occurs primarily on PCs.

After the game suffers a crash, players are most likely to encounter this error code. Now, as for the cause, it can range from having an outdated version of the game to corrupted game files. Finding the root cause of such an error code is no easy task. But can this issue be fixed? Well, continue reading to find out!

Follow the workarounds mentioned below and check out which ones are able to help you deal with this issue. Activision has yet to acknowledge this issue, so this is all you have for now.

Verify files –

The first thing you should do is verify the game files so that any missing or corrupted game files can be repaired if found. If this is your first time doing this, then what you need to do is:

Steam –
  • Open Steam and click on Library.
  • Now, right-click on the game and then select Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
  • Once the verification is done, restart your PC.
Battle.net –
  • Launch the Battle.net launcher and select All Games.
  • Next, select My Games and choose MW3.
  • Click on the gear icon and select Scan and Repair > Begin Scan.

Run the game as an administrator –

Maybe the reason you are experiencing this issue so frequently is that you aren’t running the game with admin access. So, the next time you plan on playing the game, first head over to its installation directory and then right-click on the .exe file. Now, select the Properties option, and in the Compatibility tab, checkmark the Run as Administrator option. After this, select OK, and then launch the game.

Update –

Since one of the primary cause of this error code is running an outdated version of the game, make sure that’s not the case. Update COD MW3 to its latest version, and then launch it. The issue should no longer persist.

Update your GPU drivers –

One good way to deal with a myriad of issues with a particular game is to keep your graphics drivers updated to the latest version. So, if you happen to be behind on GPU driver updates, download and install them ASAP, after which you can check whether the issue persists or not.

Disable XMP –

Try disabling XMP, as it’s been known to help with this particular issue. You can disable XMP by going to BIOS settings and turning off the option from the Memory or Overclocking section. Once you’ve disabled XMP on your PC, launch the game and see if the issue persists. If yes, then try the next workaround.

Disable Overclocking and Overlay applications –

If you have overclocked your GPU/CPU, consider restoring them to their default clock speeds. An overclocked GPU/CPU can also be the cause of this issue, which is why you should run them at their base clock speed. After this, ensure that the overlay features of all applications like Discord, MSI Afterburner, Steam, etc. are disabled. While you are at it, disable Nvidia Ansel as well.

Reinstall –

Just in case none of these workarounds help you resolve this issue, then what we suggest you do is reinstall MW3. Sometimes it’s the only method that can fix an issue, so give it a try and check if it’s of help.
